HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – Christian Burnett completed 20-of-28 passes for 184 and one touchdown and rushed four times for 25 yards and another score in Cumberland’s 35-6 victory over Kentucky Christian here Saturday at Joan C. Edwards Stadium. For her efforts Burnett was named the Music City Star of the Game.

Burnett set career-highs for completions, attempts and yards and did not turn the ball over for the second consecutive game. Cumberland (2-1) did commit three turnovers in the contest, all fumbles, which led directly to the Knights (0-4) six points.

But the Bulldog defense limited KCU to just six first downs and 57 yards of total offense, including minus 3 yards rushing.

Lemeco Miller led the Bulldogs on the ground with 79 yards on just six carries, while Tim McCord rushed 12 times for 42 yards and one touchdown. Cumberland rushed 43 times for 218 yards in the contest. Mike Moore also caught a 44-yard TD pass for CU.

Cumberland fumbled its first snap of the game from scrimmage and the Knights recovered at the Bulldog 13-yard line. The defense stiffened and forced a field goal, with Ethan Nettles connecting from 21 yards for a 3-0 KCU lead.

The Bulldogs made another mistake on its next possession, with punter Tyler Emmetts fielding a low snap with his knee touching the ground. KCU took over at the CU 17, but Michael Hagewood intercepted Cazius Clair’s third down pass at the three yard line.

Hagewood returned the INT 53 yards to the KCU 44, but Cumberland could do nothing with the ball and punted.

Cumberland got on the scoreboard on its next possession, with Burnett hitting Moore down the right sideline. Moore came back for the ball at the 10 yard line, broke several tackles and kept fighting for the end zone, with his teammates giving him the final push for the score and a 7-3 advantage.

Another mistake set up the Knights deep in Bulldog territory, this time Josh Crouch fumbling a bouncing punt on the turf. A completion from Alex Springs to Rashad Earls gave KCU 1st-and-goal at the seven, but Stephon Ransom’s sack on second down forced another field goal and Nettles’ very low 33-yard attempt was good, cutting the CU lead to 7-6.

Miller returned the kickoff 26 yards for the Bulldogs to the KCU 48 and nine plays later, McCord barreled in from five yards out for the score and a 14-6 Bulldog edge.

Cumberland got the ball back with 3:26 to play in the half with all three timeouts and methodically marched down the field, using 14 plays and converting a pair of third downs along the way. Jared White booted a 29-yard field goal on the final play of the half for a 17-6 Bulldog lead.

CU took the opening kickoff of the second half and marched to the KCU 20 before Knights defensive back Jemichael Williams forced a fumble by Da’Juan Manning and the home team recovered. But Kentucky Christian stalled and punter Matt Prewitt fumbled the snap and ended up booting it left-footed.

The punt only reached the KCU 26 and the Bulldogs took advantage. Seven plays later Thomas Goodloe ran in untouched from the one for a 24-6 Bulldog lead.

Kentucky Christian punted on its next possession but the snap was over Prewitt’s head. He kicked it out of the end zone for a safety for Cumberland.

The Bulldogs took the ensuing kickoff 50 yards in four plays, with Burnett sneaking in from the one for the score and a 32-6 advantage. White added a 37-yard field goal with 5:31 to play for the final margin.

Cumberland begins a three-game homestand next Saturday against West Virginia Tech at 1:30 p.m. at Lindsey Donnell Stadium-Kirk Field.
