Miller's three TDs leads Bulldogs

LEBANON, Tenn. – Lemeco Miller rushed one for touchdown and caught a pair of TD passes, totaling 114 all-purpose yards in Cumberland’s 30-7 victory over West Virginia Tech Saturday at Lindsey Donnell Stadium. For her efforts Miller was named the Music City Star of the Game.

Miller was named the Music City Star of the Game with the three touchdowns, a 14-yard run in the first quarter and 30 and 5-yard TD catches in the second half.

Cumberland (3-1) won its third straight contest before heading into Mid-South Conference West Division play next week against Lindsey Wilson at home at 1:30 p.m. The Bulldogs have allowed just 20 points over the last three games when both teams were playing their starters.

Cumberland’s defense put up another outstanding effort, collecting nine sacks and limiting West Virginia Tech (1-4) to minus 41 yards rushing. The Golden Bears posted just 150 yards of total offense, including just three yards in the first half. Ben Miller accounted for three tackles for loss and Chris Miles added 2.5 while eight total players registered at least half a sack.

Miller rushed eight times for 64 yards and caught four passes for 50 yards. The Bulldogs rushed 48 times for 168 yards and one score.

Cumberland took the opening kickoff 69 yards on seven plays, matching right down the field for a score. Miller capped the drive with a 14-yard scamper around right end untouched into the end zone for a 7-0 advantage just 3:14 into the contest.

The Bulldogs struggled offensively for most of the rest of the half, but the defense picked up the slack, holding the Golden Bears to just three yards of total offense in the first half, including minus 42 yards rushing. CU accounted for five sacks, eight tackles for loss and two QB hurries.

WVU Tech’s big play of the second period came on a 40-second jump-ball completion to Kashif Walls that put the ball at the Cumberland six yard line, but cornerback Chris Simpson stripped the ball from Walls and recovered the fumble.

Daniel Dayton gave the Bulldogs great field position with a 16-yard punt return late in the half and CU took advantage. Christian Burnett hit Tim McCord with a 3rd-and-goal pass from three yards out for the score with just 14 seconds left in the second period. The extra point gave Cumberland 14-0 lead at the break.

CU’s first possession of the second half ended in another score, this time a 34-yard catch and run for a touchdown to Miller, giving the Bulldogs a 20-0 edge.

The Golden Bears answered with a four-play, 70-yard drive capped by a 34-yard TD to Walls, as he outjumped Simpson near the goal line.

Cumberland answered early in the fourth quarter with another touchdown after a short punt and return by Dayton set the Bulldogs up at the WVU Tech 44. Burnett hit Miller in the right corner of the end zone for a five yard TD and Miller’s third score of the contest.

CU added a field with 3:07 remaining, a 32-yarder from Jared White, after Simon Moriarty’s interception. BJ Stewart tipped what was supposed to be a screen pass by the Golden Bears right into Moriarty’s hands, who returned the INT 10 yards.
