Box Score

PIKEVILLE, Ky. – Lemeco Miller posted 208 all-purpose yards and two touchdowns and 19th-ranked Cumberland rolled up 491 yards of total offense, holding off the University of Pikeville, 41-23, here Saturday at Hillard Howard Field.

The Bulldogs (4-1) won their second straight road game and third away from home this season and won the contest despite 11 penalties for 90 yards. Miller caught an 82-yard touchdown pass in the third quarter and added a three-yard plunge in the final period for his ninth and 10th touchdowns of the season.

Reed Gurchiek enjoyed one of the best passing days of his career, finishing 17-of-21 for 245 yards and two touchdowns and actually missed several other big-play opportunities, overthrowing Miller and Blake DeBoard in the first half.

CU rushed 38 times for 246 yards, including 62 on nine carries and a touchdown from DeBoard. But turnovers and kick returns kept the Bears (3-3) in the game, with CU fumbling twice deep in UPike territory and giving up 261 in returns, including a 95-yard kickoff by Jordan Amis for the score in the final period.

Jared White enjoyed another good day, making all five extra points along with two field goals, keeping the junior perfect on the year. Thomas Goodloe put the finishing touches on the win for CU with a 10-yard scoring run with 2:39 remaining.

UPike’s Trevor Hoskins completed 25-of-39 for 194 yards but was sacked three times. The Bears were limited to just 275 yards of total offense, but stayed in the game with all of the returns, including 191 yards by Amos.

Marquis Hagewood also had a good day returning kicks for the Bulldogs, totaling 104 yards, including a 48-yarder.

The Bulldogs got on the board first, with DeBoard going around the leftside for a 10-yard score, his first career touchdown, for a 7-0 CU lead with 4:57 remaining in first period. The run completed a seven-play, 58-yard drive.

Pikeville caught the visitors in a blitz early in the second period and Hunter Adams broke through the line and rushed 31 yards for a score, finishing a 13-play, 96-yard drive for the Bears after DeBoard fumbled deep in UPike territory.

Marquis Hagewood returned the ensuing kickoff to the 49-yard line, but CU punted three plays later and Pikeville drove 30 yards on eight plays before Grayson Quick booted a 41-yard field goal for a 10-7 UPike lead with 7:32 remaining in the half.

Marquis Hagewood had another good return and the Bulldogs picked up 30 yards in penalties at the end of the return, but a personal foul penalty deep in Bears territory forced CU to kick a field goal. White was good from 36 yards, tying the game at 10.

Amis returned the ensuing kickoff 60 yards for UPike, setting up the Bears deep in Cumberland territory, but the defense held, with Michael Hagewood just missing an interception on third down. Quick was good again, this time from 34 yards, for a 13-10 edge with 1:17 left in the period.

The Bulldogs answered before the break, though, finally connecting on a big play. Gurchiek found BJ Stewart down the right hash on third down and the tight end broke a tackle for a 47-yard touchdown and a 17-13 CU lead at the break.

Miller had the 82-yard catch-and-run late in the third quarter and Grayson booted a 34-yard field goal late in the period. White made a 22-yard field goal early in the final quarter before Miller plunged in from three yards out for a 34-16 advantage.

Amis returned the kickoff 95 yards for the score, tight-roping the home sideline for most of the last 50 yards. The Bulldogs held UPike deep in Bears territory later in the period and Goodloe rushed twice, the final one 10 yards for the score.
