LEBANON, Tenn. – D’Angelo Jordan rushed for 169 yards and one touchdown and 19th-ranked University of the Cumberlands scored 48 straight points to end the game in a 55-13 victory over No. 22 Cumberland University on Saturday at Nokes-Lasater Field, spoiling the debut of the Bulldogs’ new facility.
The Patriots (2-0) racked up 544 yards of total offense, including 428 on the ground on 52 attempts and five touchdowns, defeating the Bulldogs for the eighth consecutive time.
Lemeco Miller was the workhorse for the Bulldogs (1-1) for the second straight game, carrying 25 times for 123 yards and two touchdowns, including 22 rushes for 112 yards and two scores in the first half. But a 38-yard touchdown pass to Willie Gibson, followed by a blocked punt that Gibson ran back for a touchdown and then an interception by the Bulldogs, their second of the first half, turned the tide in favor of the visitors.
Reed Gurchiek finished just 2-of-11 passing for 40 yards and the two picks for CU. Patriots quarterback Jay Bright was 8-of-16 for 116 yards and one score.
The Bulldogs took advantage of the first turnover of the game to score the opening points, with Cody McCallister recovering a fumble at the UC43. Miller rushed 27 yards on the first play of the drive and two plays later carried three yards for the score and a 7-0 lead.
The Patriots put together a 68-yard drive later in the quarter, highlighted by a 38-yard leaping grab in the end zone by Gibson, tying the contest at seven.
Cumberland answered with a 13-play, 81-yard drive that featured a 32-yard completion to B.J. Stewart. Miller converted a 4th-and-3 on the drive (just barely) and then broke several tackles on his way to the end zone on fourth down from the two. The extra point was blocked for a 13-7 home team advantage.
Terrance Cobb’s five-yard touchdown and the PAT gave the Patriots a 14-13 lead with 5:48 to play in the half. On CU’s ensuing possession Brendan Kelly blocked the punt and the ball bounced right to Gibson, who carried it 20 yards for the score and a 21-13 Patriots edge.
Gurchiek tossed his second interception of the half on the next Cumberland drive but the defense stiffened, holding the visitors to a 27-yard field goal. The Patriots used their timeouts just before the half and were able to score again after a 39-yard reception by Dekeldric Felton with five seconds remaining. Justin Dyer booted a 23-yard field goal and UC led 27-13 at the break.
The Patriots took the opening drive of the second half and marched 10 plays and 79 yards for the touchdown, with Bright going untouched from a yard out. UC caught the Bulldogs in a blitz on the next possession and Iquan Deed went 50 yards around left end for the score, giving the visitors a 41-13 advantage.
Jordan added to his resumé with a 46-yard scoring run at the end of the third quarter for a 48-13 lead for UC and Zeke Eier finished the scoring with a three-yard plunge in the final period.
Cumberland begins division action next Saturday, hosting Belhaven University at 1:30 p.m.
