LEBANON, Tenn. – Sondre Risa headed in a corner kick early in the second half and Cumberland men’s soccer claimed its first Mid-South Conference regular season championship in a 1-1 draw Wednesday night against the University of the Cumberlands in Williamsburg, Ky.

The Phoenix (8-4-3, 6-0-1 Mid-South) upped their unbeaten streak to eight matches with the draw and earned the No. 1 seed in next week’s Mid-South Conference Championships that begin Friday, November 2 in Bowling Green, Ky.

The Cumberlands (7-4-3, 4-2-1) scored on a penalty kick by Filip Milivojevic in the 39th minute, beating Cumberland goalkeeper Bennet Strutz, who finished with seven saves, low and right. The Patriots nearly scored midway through the period when Marvin van der Made hit the crossbar.

Risa squared the match for the Phoenix in the 53rd minute, heading in a Martin Walsh corner kick for his fifth goal of the season.

The match was about as evenly played as possible, with the Cumberlands posting a 22-18 advantage in shots and the teams combining for 37 fouls and seven yellow cards. UC goalkeeper Ahmed Ghatwary also collected seven saves for the home team.
