Box Score Athens, Tenn.-- Late goals from Tennessee Wesleyan's Montel McKenzie pushed the Bulldogs past the Phoenix in their season opener.
Tennessee Wesleyan (2-1-0) jumped out to an early lead with a goal from Kyle Wynne off a free kick in the fourth minute of the game. One minute later Wesleyan’s Gabriel Andrade put a diving header in the back of the net in the fifth minute.
The Phoenix (0-1-0) fought back to tie the game in the first half. Bakary Bagayoko scored the first goal for CU after Wesleyan keeper made a save on a penalty kick, but Bagayoko was able to get the rebound and score. Tyler Watson continued the scoring to tie the game at the 30 minute mark with a beamer from 20 yards out.
The second half featured Wesleyan's McKenzie scoring two unassisted goals one in the 53rd minute and the other in the 78th minute.
The Bulldogs out shot the Phoenix 14-7, with Wesleyan having six shots on goal and CU having four. The Phoenix were able to take seven corner kicks, but failed to capitalize on any of them.
The Phoenix are scheduled to open the home season against Fisk University on August 27th at 3 p.m at Lindsey Donnell Stadium in Lebanon, Tenn.
