Life routs Cumberland in final regular season away game

MARIETTA, Ga.- Phoenix suffered a 26 point loss in their final regular season away game, solidifying the nine-seed in the conference tournament. CU will have to go on the road for the play-in game to go to the Mid-South Conference Tournament in Bowling Green.

Cumberland (7-18, 1-13 MSC) could not get into a groove offensively in the first half, but played very physical and shot over 50% in the second half. Cumberland turned over the ball 18 times in the first half getting down big and never being able to overcome. Britany Miller posted a career-high 19 points and 11 rebounds for a double-double.

Life (13-14, 4-9 MSC) shot 54% on the game and 40% from behind the three point line. Four Running Eagles scored double-digit points led by Sydni Tears 24 points. Tierra Lindsey scored 15, Kiana Glenn finished with 14 points and Tierra Tullis posted 10 points, six boards and six assists.

Life scored the first six points of the game before Johnson hit a three from the left corner. Miller rejected a shot on the defensive end to spark Cumberland, but Maeisha Teasley picked Johnson’s pocket and dished it to Tears for an 8-3 lead with 4:21 left in the first quarter.

Cumberland struggled offensively in the first quarter only hitting two shots from the field. The Phoenix turned it over 12 times, but Life didn’t fair much better turning it over seven times. Katherine Griffith picked up three fouls in the first quarter. Cumberland trails 15-5 after one quarter. Bright spot after the first Britany Miller picked up six boards and two blocks.

Life took over in the second quarter beating Cumberland down the court on several possession and shooting 58% in the first half. Life put up 33 points in the second quarter to take a commanding 48-17 lead into the half.

Watson hit a three for the first score of the second half for Cumberland, but Life already tacked on nine more points. Cumberland finally got something going after Coach Blum took a timeout, Miller scored four points in the paint and Pittman picked up a two pointer. Watson added a couple from the free throw line. Griffith picked up four points inside the lane. Life maintained a 30 point lead throughout the third, 70-40.

Life cruised to the finish line in the final quarter winning 90-64.

The Phoenix will close out the regular season at home versus Georgetown and Thomas More next Thursday and Saturday.
