Football picks up 19-7 win over Florida Memorial

LEBANON, Tenn.--Cumberland jumps out to an early lead and holds on to get a 19-7 win over Florida Memorial University for the first win of the season for the Phoenix.

Cumberland (1-2) had their best output of the season offensively scoring 19 points and totaling 387 yards of offense. The Phoenix posted 206 of that on the ground with a balanced attack. The two touchdowns for CU came on the ground from Treylon Sheppard. Quarterback Dylan Carpenter completed 15-of-24 passes for 181 yards and added 59 on the ground.

Florida Memorial (0-5) only accounted for 179 yards of total offense as the Cumberland defense made it hard for the Lions to do anything all day. Prentiss Summerall and Terron Smith both had interceptions for Cumberland as FMU quarterback Antoine Williams finished 15-of-28 for 109 yards with one touchdown and two interceptions. George Young rushed for 60 yards and received for 42 yards and one score. 

Cumberland took their opening drive the distance to set the tone for the game as the first offensive play Carpenter found Ian Hafner for a 30-yard completion. After Cumberland marched the rest of the distance on the ground Sheppard punched it in from two yards out. The point-after try was blocked for a 6-0 lead. 

The Phoenix's second possession of the game, the team took up seven minutes of game time on 14 plays as Hunter Mathis kicked in a 20-yard field goal with 13:38 left in the second. 

The Lions forced Cumberland into a punt their third possession and wasted little time cutting into the lead as Williams found George on the third play for 30-yards to make it 9-7 Cumberland. 

The Phoenix would attempt a 26-yard field goal before the half expired, but Mathis pulled it wide left. 

In the third quarter, Cumberland started a drive after a bad punt for Florida Memorial's 38-yard line. The Phoenix would take just four plays to score as Carpenter threw a dime to Styles Corder for 26-yards. The next play, Sheppard punched in his second touchdown to give Cumberland a 16-7 lead. 

After eight back-and-forth possession, Cumberland padded onto the lead with a 12-play drive that lasted seven minutes. Cumberland couldn't punch it in the endzone, but Mathis nailed his second field goal from 24-yards out to make it 19-6. 

Terron Smith picked off a pass in the last minute and a half and Cumberland would run out the time for their first victory of the season. 

Cumberland will be on the road next week to take on No. 1 Lindsey Wilson in Columbia, Ky. Kick-off is set for 2:30 p.m. central time.
