Box Score Columbia, Ky.-- Cumberland earns a huge five set victory to take down Lindsey Wilson College for the second time this season.
Harlee Kate Reid had a fantastic night, earning her Cumberland career high kills with 23. She also added 14 digs in the game, making it her third double-double of the season.
Nicole Bott recorded her sixth double-double of the season with 27 assists and 13 digs.
Cumberland had a dominant start to set one with an immediate 4-0 run, during which Bott had two service aces. The Phoenix maintained their lead for the remainder of the set, expanding it as far as seven points multiple times. Lindsey Wilson found some late energy to close in on the Phoenix, but were unable to find an advantage in the set. Cumberland’s attackers committed only three errors in the set, finishing with an impressive .286 attack percentage as a team and taking the set 25-21.
Set two was a close battle from the first point, beginning in favor of the Blue Raiders. The teams went point-for-point the entire set, with the Phoenix taking their first lead of the set at 10-9. Neither team took more than a two point lead until a five point run by the Blue Raiders gave them a significant edge that Cumberland was unable to come back from. Lindsey Wilson held out to win the set with a score of 25-22.
The Phoenix had a slow start to set three, falling behind the Blue Raiders from early on by seven points at 10-3. Cumberland cleaned up their play to go on a much needed seven point run to tie the score, during which Reid picked up a kill and a block. It was another tight race to finish from that point on, but Cumberland was able to pull out a huge 25-19 win.
Reid kicked off set four with an unstoppable swing from the outside, followed up by Bott with her fourth ace of the match. The Blue Raiders picked up some huge momentum as well, recording their best hitting percentage of the match and making it another intense battle. The teams were tied at 20-20, 21-21, 22-22 and again at 23-23. Lindsey Wilson earned the important 24th point after a long rally and closed the set at 25-23 with back-to-back kills.
Cumberland started the fifth set strong with another deep kill from Reid and a huge block by Luciana Arena. The Phoenix held onto that lead for the entire set with a 15-11 finish.
Two other Phoenix attackers finished in the double digits. Hazel Konkel had a great game with 12 kills and five blocks. Lauren Galvan was right behind with 11 kills of her own.
The Phoenix will be back in Kentucky- this time in the Campbellsville area- on Friday, October 21 to take on Campbellsville University at 1 pm.
