Campbellsville takes down Cumberland in MSC Quarterfinals

Box Score

LEBANON, Tenn.--Campbellsville scores three second-half goals to down the Phoenix in the Mid-South Conference Quarterfinals, 4-2.

The Tigers (9-5-1) upset the Phoenix as they outshot CU 13-12 and 8-5 in shots on goal. Cumberland had to play from behind pretty much the entirety of the match and could not find any spacing offensively to create many great chances.

Campbellsville was able to keep Cumberland at bay in the first half and not give any great opportunities. The Phoenix took five shots, but just two were on goal, neither were great goal scoring opportunities as Ao Yamada and Brenda Cernas each fired deep shots right at the Campbellsville keeper.

The Tigers were able to crack the scoreboard in the 19th minute as Zoe Collyer committed a foul just in front of the flag in the corner. Angeline Kiah played the ball to the back post and after it bounced around a bit Lauren Woodcock was able to get a shot off that Graziano saved. The ball bounced up on the rebound and Jessie Bryson headed it into the back of the net for the goal.

Cumberland was able to get the equalizer in the 57th minute as Cernas played a great through ball to Macy Douglas and she beat Sasaki to tie the match at 1-1.

Unfortunately, just a minute later Campbellsville scored after CU scored, the Tigers answered with a goal. Campbellsville had a corner kick taken by Sangmin Cha, it was cleared back  out to Cha and she took a deep shot that found its way into the net.

The Tigers went on to make it a two goal lead after Bethin Boyle was open at the top of the 18 and fired a shot for the goal.

Cumberland answered that goal quickly within a minute as Cernas took a shot that rattled off the crossbar and wound up with Grace Morris for a shot and goal to cut the deficit to 3-2 in the 80th minute.

The Tigers would add an insurance goal late from Rebecca Lillie in the 86th minute for the 4-2 final.

The loss ends Cumberland’s Tournament run. The Phoenix will have to await the results of the NAIA Women’s Soccer Selection Committee to see if they will receive an At-Large Berth to the NAIA National Championships.
