Cumberland Avenges Early Season Loss on the Road at Oakwood

HUNTSVILLE, Ala.—Cumberland men’s basketball avenges an early season loss to Oakwood on the road with solid defense and a well rounded team game.

Cumberland (12-11) picked up a win in their final non-conference game of the season over the Ambassadors 79-46. The Phoenix shot 54.8% from the field and notched six triples. CU held Oakwood to just 31.8% from the field to get a big 33-point win.

Jordan Stephens had another 20 point performance going for 21 on 8-of-15 shooting. Ty’Reek Johnson notched his first double-double at Cumberland scoring 10 points with a game-high 11 rebounds. Isaac Stephens scored 13 points and added seven boards.

Oakwood scored the first basket of the game, but that was the only lead the Ambassadors would have all night. Cumberland jumped up 11-9 before layup would tie it at 11-11. The Phoenix then took off on a 12-0 run and never looked up.

Cumberland would build that up to a 39-23 lead at the break.

The Phoenix quickly pushed it out to a 20-point lead on the first two possessions of the second half. By the 10-minute mark of the second half Cumberland had the lead up to 30 points and cruised to a big win.

Cumberland will be back in conference play this Saturday at Tennessee Southern as a part of a five-game road swing. Tip-off is set for 3:00 p.m. following the women’s game.
