Phoenix Hold no. 5 Blue Raiders to 0-0 Draw in Columbia

Columbia, KY - - Getting back to action after a ten day break, the Phoenix traveled to face off against the no. 5 team in the nation, Lindsey Wilson. Swapping chances throughout the match, Cumberland stood strong on the road and held the Blue Raiders to a 0-0 draw.

With both of these teams coming into today's matchup with such strong defensive records, it always felt as though it would be a battle for either team to score. Playing a similar brand of soccer, the Phoenix and Blue Raiders both came into this game sat on nine goals allowed through twelve games, only being bested by nine other teams in the NAIA.

The first half was quite eventful, though most of the praises deserved to go to the Cumberland defense. Alejandro Carrillo and Cathal Coyne were tasked with keeping the no. 5 team in the nation in check and they did just that through the first 45 minutes of action.

It took the Phoenix up until the 40 minute mark to register their first shot, as they slowly worked their way into this MSC clash. Just as Cumberland grew more comfortable bringing the ball further up the pitch, the Blue Raiders showed why they are so dangerous, hitting on a rapid counterattack which took a massive last-ditch slide tackle from the freshman Carrillo to stop.

The deadlock was not broken before the half ended, taking the goalless draw with it.

Lindsey kept up their high pressure in the second half, mounting attack after attack, though the Phoenix back line continued to hold strong as time ticked down. Growing frustrated as they sat goalless with more than 25 minutes off the clock, the Blue Raider midfielders gathered several fouls.

One such foul gave the Phoenix what was their most threatening chance of the night, as Cathal Coyne delivered a signature ball over the top from his free kick. His effort flew to the back post and with the Lindsey Wilson shot stopper off his line, the Phoenix smashed a shot at the goal, taking an outstanding goal line clearance to see the game stay level.

Flipping ends, the Phoenix played a nearly identical defensive motion. With less than ten minutes to play, Jack McCarthy made a save at his near post which took several rebounds and a bicycle kick on the goal line to keep the Cumberland shutout.

As tension grew higher and the clock ran lower, the Phoenix found themselves a man down at the 85th minute. Having been put on the ground several times already, Marcos Perez took offense to being shoved from behind one last time and retaliated with a push of his own, ending his night with a red card.

LWC attempted several more attacks with nothing coming to fruition, meaning the game ended in a 0-0 draw. Both teams' defensive records come out of the game unscathed, though the Blue Raiders will be disappointed to drop points this late in the season.

Cumberland will play their final home match of the regular season, facing off against the Patriots from the University of the Cumberlands. Kickoff is scheduled for Wednesday, October 25th at 2:30 PM.
