Phoenix take down No. 23 Patriots 21-17 on Homecoming

LEBANON, Tenn.--Cumberland upends No. 23 at home in a big team win to celebrate homecoming, 21-17, over the Cumberlands.

Cumberland (3-2, 1-1 MSC) moved the ball well and played tough hard-nosed defense to fend off the Patriots. Cumberland racked up 397 yards of total offense, rushing for 305 in the game. The defense forced three turnovers and held the Patriots to 17 points.

Treylon Sheppard had another huge game rushing for 146 yards and broke loose for a 79-yard touchdown rush in the fourth quarter to swing the momentum to Cumberland. Quarterback Luke Holloway was elusive with his legs rushing for 89 yards and two touchdowns. He also completed 11-of-25 passes for 92 yards and one interception. Nick Burge added 70 yards on the ground.

Six Phoenix got involved in the passing game led by Tim Freel caught four passes for 25 yards, Elijah Gaskin added two catches for 25, and William Spence had two catches for 17 yards.

The defense played great holding the Patriots to 249 yards of total offense. Darius James ran for 109 yards and a touchdown, but they held the Cumberlands to 33.3% completions in the passing game for just 133 yards and two picks.

Derek Taylor had a big game picking off two passes for Cumberland, one early in the first quarter and the second after Cumberland scored to retake the lead in the fourth. Joey Samples led Cumberland in tackles again with seven while Boston Follis had six. Xayllyn McKinnie, Jalen Brown, and Aaron Davis each had five.

The Cumberlands had a few blunders on special teams that helped aid the Phoenix to the win. The Patriots muffed a punt that CU picked up in plus territory and scored two plays later while also having a 45-yard field goal try go off the left upright and a chip shot field goal blocked by Cumberland.

The Phoenix couldn't have asked for a better start to the game as they took the opening kick and drove down the field for a touchdown. It was a big fourth down run the Holloway found a seam and scampered for 37 yards into the endzone for an early 7-0 lead.

The first Patriots possession, the Cumberlands were moving the ball downfield before a third down heave was chucked towards the endzone. Taylor went up and snagged it for an interception inside their own five.

A couple of possessions later, the Pats were able able to break through and find the endzone. James got loose on a 35-yard run to tie it with 4:24 left in the first.

Tied in the second quarter with both teams battling for field possession Cumberland was forced to punt it back to the Cumberlands. The Patriots return man muffed the punt allowing Cumberland to fall on it at the Cumberlands 40-yard line. Sheppard ran for 24 yards inside the redzone and Holloway finished it with a 17-yard rush for six on a two play drive and Phoenix 14-7 lead at the half.

On the opening drive of the second half, the Cumberlands had a big return into Cumberland territory to set up the drive. After a couple of first downs and a penalty gave the Patriots a first and goal. The defense stood strong, holding them to settle for a 23-yard field goal to cut into the lead 14-10 with 11:22 left in the third where the score stood through the third.

At the end of the third and start of the fourth, the Patriots had a long drive that again pushed them to a first and goal situation. Cumberland, yet again, forced them into a field goal try, but this time Samples got a hand up and blocked the 19-yard attempt to keep it where it was.

Unfortunately, Cumberland went three-and-out and were forced to punt in their own endzone. The Patriots blocked the punt and fell on it in the endzone for a touchdown and their first lead of the game at 17-14 with 7:55 left.

On the ensuing Cumberland drive, Sheppard got loose on the inside and beat everyone down the field for a 79-yard touchdown rush to flip the momentum and the lead back to Cumberland, 21-17 with 7:32 to go.

The Cumberlands picked up a first down on the next drive, but were backed into a third and long. Patriots quarterback Jay Roberts heaved it down field and Taylor went and picked it off for his second of the game to give Cumberland the ball back.

The Phoenix converted on a fourth and short and forced the Cumberlands into burning all of their timeouts. CU drove all the way into the redzone and went for again on fourth down, but this time the Patriots got the stop.

After burning over five minutes on the clock, the Cumberlands had just 22 seconds to play and need to go 89 yards to get a score. The Phoenix defensive backs locked in and forced the Patriots into three incomplete passes to end the game.

The Phoenix will ride this momentum into next week as they go on a stretch of four-straight away games. Cumberland will be on the road at No. 21 Georgetown. Kick-off is set for 12:30 p.m. central time. The Cumberland Sports Network will be there for all of your coverage.
