Cumberland Finishes 0-2 at the Marian Classic, Falling to St. Francis 93-72

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind.-- Unable to overcome an early uphill battle, the Phoenix closed out their stay at the Marian Classic with a 93-72 loss to St. Francis.
Offensively, the teams were fairly comparable as the Cougars shot 49.6% from the field with the Phoenix not far behind at 40.8%. The Cougars counted just three more triples than the Phoenix with ten total. What set St. Francis apart shooting wise was a nearly perfect evening of free throws, going 23-for-28 from behind the line.
It came down to a battle of defense, as St. Francis maintained control having outrebounded Cumberland 49-31. 15 of St. Francis' boards resulted in second chance points as they helped themselves to extra possessions all night long.
Jaylen Negron was Cumberland's leading scorer, recording 18 points on 8-for-17 shooting and one triple. Doyel Cockrill III and Jaheim Berry added 12 points apiece, with Berry going 3-for-4 from behind the arc.
The Cougars came out strong to start the game, executing on their first two possessions to put the Phoenix at any early 5-0 disadvantage.
After a quiet first three minutes for CU, Demond Franklin woke the team up, slamming in Negron's stolen ball to break the dry spell. The play sparked a 4-0 run for the Phoenix to even out the score, but the Cougars continued to drive in with determination to create an 11 point difference.
Challenged with tightening up the defensive end, Cumberland held St. Francis to a scoreless minute while Berry simultaneously drilled two from behind the arc to help cut the deficit down to three. Cumberland's momentum was short lived, however, as St. Francis immediately responded with an 11-1 run, forcing four Phoenix turnovers in the process.
St. Francis headed into the break with a convincing 15 point lead after a quiet final six minutes from CU.
The second half saw no change in momentum from St. Francis' side as they created opportunity after opportunity, wasting no time to expand the lead to 20. The Phoenix struggled to get into a solid groove as their scoring plays were few and far between.
Despite Cumberland's late game energy spurt and trio of threes in the final seven minutes, there was simply not enough time for the Phoenix to recover the daunting disadvantage.
The Phoenix will have two weeks to recover from this competitive weekend as they look ahead to their trip to Kingsport, Tennessee on November 24. The Phoenix will kick off The Show facing No. 3 Arizona Christian in Cumberland's first NAIA Top-25 match of the season.
