Oakland City drops Phoenix on Day One of Cumberland Classic

LEBANON, Tenn.--Cumberland posted 23 turnovers and were cold from the free throw line allowing Oakland City to win by double-figures 69-49.

It was a sloppy game all around as there were 55 fouls in the game to slow things down with poor free throw shooting on both sides. Cumberland went 18-of-49 from the field and made just one three and really struggled from the charity stripe going 12-of-32.

Lindsey Freeman led Cumberland in scoring posting a double-double with 14 points on 6-0f-11 shooting and 10 boards. Kayla Gordon finished with eight points and eight rebounds. Myajae Eubanks added six points.

Maddie Brillhardt scored eight off the bench knocking down the lone three-pointer Cumberland made. Emaleigh Tarpley posted four points before she fouled out.

Oakland City finished shooting 45.3% from the field on 24-of-53 shooting. They buried five three pointers and had a better percentage than Cumberland at the line going 15-of-29.

Jalaya Dowell finished with a game-high 19 points on 8-of-11 shooting and a team-high six rebounds. Marissa Austin added 13 points for the only other Mighty Oak in double-figures.

The game started with back and forth action as Freeman got going early in this game converting on two layups and Eubanks hit a jumper for the scoring up to the first media at 6-5.

Cumberland fell cold over the next three minutes before Freeman made a free throw and Eubanks made a layup. In the quarter, Cumberland went to the line 10 times, but struggled to convert, only making two free throws. Eubanks dished it to Gordon under the basket for an easy lay in. The Mighty Oaks hit a three at the horn to lead 18-12 after the first

In the second, Oakland City caught fire making 10-of-16 shots and three triples to score 23 points in the quarter. The Mighty Oaks held Cumberland to just eight points to build a 41-20 lead at the break.

Cumberland outscored Oakland City in the third, but only slighly edging them 13-10, so the lead stayed at 19 points 52-33.

The Phoenix had their best offensive quarter in the fourth scoring 16 points, but couldn't gain any traction as they lost on day one of the Cumberland Classic 68-49.

Cumberland will look to redeem themselves tomorrow at 1:00 p.m. as they tip-off against No. 18 Providence.
