Racers Are Too Much for Phoenix in Exhibition Matchup

Box Score MURRAY, Ky. - - After a strong first quarter, Murray State controlled the following three quarters in a 121-63 rout of Cumberland.

The loss does not count for the Phoenix as it was just an exhibition, but the win does count for the Racers as it was Murray State's regular season home opener.

Cumberland struggled out of the gate, scoring just nine points in the first period, but their offense had to pick things up quickly with the high-paced Racers offense running away.

Jana Claire Swafford led the way for the Phoenix, with a game high 18 points, including a scorching hot start to the second half. The junior guard came out of the break with all cylinders firing, scoring 11 straight points for the Phoenix, who managed 25 points in the third quarter, their best showing of the night.

The only other Phoenix that scored in double-digits in this game was Kayla Gordon, who shot 5-11 from the field for 10 points, and managed to grab three rebounds.

Emaleigh Tarpley was another bright spot for the Phoenix, grabbing an impressive six rebounds and showing calmness while fighting a strong Murray State press.

CU showed great resolve despite playing on the wrong side of a deficit for most of the night, managing to still shoot 40% from the field as a unit, and outshooting the Racers from beyond the arc, as well as at the charity stripe.

The Phoenix will be back in action this Thursday, hosting the Welch College Flames in Lebanon. Tipoff is scheduled for 5:30 PM.
