Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Women's Soccer Falls to Hope International in Round of 16

Foley, Ala. - - The Cumberland women's soccer team fell to Hope International after a back and forth affair, dropping their round of 16 matchup, 1-0.

Both sides of this matchup came into tonight's game with a combined five victories over ranked opponents in their last six matches, building an anticipating night of soccer.

With as much as there was on the line though, there was little happening inside of the first 20 minutes of action. Just five box score stats were recorded in that time, meaning much of the action was slow and methodical, with both sides trying to find their opponents exploits.

The Phoenix were the first team to strike, when in the 24th minute of the game Brenna Swiger found herself a golden opportunity to score. A Gabby Jones pass deflected off a Royals defender and into her path. She had a fraction of a second to shoot before the defender closed down on her back and her left footed first-time shot went just right of the post.

Going in ebbs and flows, the Royals began to gain traction as the half came to a close, earning several corner kicks. One of those kicks gave Hope International a shot on target which took a monumental goal line clearance from Lucia Mei to keep the game even just before the 40 minute mark.

Neither team found the back of the net before the half however, taking a 0-0 draw into the break. Hope International narrowly led Cumberland in shots and corners both, leading 6-5 and 2-1 respectively.

The opening twenty minutes of the second half mimicked the first, as just a single shot was taken by either side. Just after that mark though, Sabrina Graziano pulled off a tremendous save after going nearly thirty minutes without any action in net.

Despite her efforts though, the Phoenix went down against the Royals in heartbreaking fashion. A ball was chipped over the Cumberland defense and although they expected for an offsides to be called, they were not so fortunate.

Ella Tuplin closed the initial shot down and saw it ricochet off the post into the six-yard box, where Olga Luna of Hope International had a wide open net to score, and smashed her shot off the crossbar and in.

With that goal coming at the 78th minute, the Royals were left with guarding their lead for ten more minutes. Grace Morris and Brenna Swiger both put two more shots on goal in that time, but HIU made certain that their ticket to the quarterfinals were punched.

Stats read very similarly between the two sides, the Phoenix however lacked the edge that they possessed most all year. After the loss their season comes to an end, finishing with a record of 16-2-3 and making their first appearance at the final site since 2016.
