Men’s Soccer Scores Seven Goals in MSC Quarterfinals Win over FHU

LEBANON, Tenn.—Cumberland scores seven goals as they dominate Freed-Hardeman in the Mid-South Conference Quarterfinals and advance to the semis on Wednesday.

Cumberland already hosted Freed-Hardeman once earlier this season and although they controlled the game and reigned supreme in most statistical categories, the Phoenix only won by a narrow 2-0 margin. With so much riding on this one game, the stars looked to shine, and that they did.

After ten minutes of slower, methodical play, the Phoenix began to find their footing. It took 13 minutes for the 3-seed to find their first goal, but after that point they flooded in. First on the board was the Phoenix's hero from the battle of the Cumberlands, John Azar.

Winning the penalty, his teammates elected that he step up and take the shot, which he made no mistake on. His effort went into the bottom right corner, raising his tally on the season up to 7.

Just over ten minutes later, Robbie Lyons struck what was almost certainly the best free kick that has been attempted at Lindsey Donnell Stadium this season. With the ball placed perfectly for his preferred left foot, he curled a near unsaveable ball into the top right corner, extending what has been one of the highest scoring outbursts any Phoenix has had this season.

Those two goals were just half of what Cumberland had to offer in the first 45 minutes, as Marcos Perez and Kam Stanley managed a goal in quick succession. Perez, along with Lyons, has had a week to remember as he assisted Robbie twice against Bethel and grabbed a goal of his own today.

Finishing up the first half, Kam Stanley found himself on the end of a delightful long pass from Cathal Coyne, leading to his second goal of the season. Making a run in behind the Lion defense, he controlled the ball and after a pair of touches, passed the ball underneath the keeper's outstretched arm.

Seeing all of his teammates score, Victor Ramirez decided to get in on the action and he opened up his scoring account not just for the season, but for his career. Playing one-twos up and down the wing with Christian Chase, Ramirez found a way to score from an impossibly tight angle.

The Phoenix's previous high scoring game was a 5-0 shutout of Delta State this past month, though today Cumberland was two goals better. Making his case for offensive player of the week, Robbie Lyons added in yet another goal, taking the lead up to six.

Capping off what was an excellent opening round for Cumberland, Ramirez added in a second goal, seeing the Phoenix finish as 7-0 victors.

CU advances to the Mid-South Conference Semifinals and will take on the winner of 2-seed Cumberlands and 7-seed Georgetown. That match will take place tomorrow with the semis slated for Wednesday on the campus of Lindsey Wilson.
