Phoenix rout the Tigers 3-0 in MSC Quarterfinals Matchup

Lebanon, Tenn. - - Kicking off the Mid-South Conference tournament, the No. 3 seeded Cumberland Phoenix welcomed to town the No. 6 seed, Georgetown College. Mari Sagstad was on a mission to send the Phoenix into the next round, scoring or assisting all three Phoenix goals, on the way to a 3-0 rout of the Tigers.

In their previous matchup in Lebanon, the Phoenix ran away with the game early and looked to do the same thing now that the tournament is here. Mari Sagstad came into the game riding her biggest goal drought of the season, having not scored for two consecutive games, and swiftly corrected her form.

Using her excellent hold up play, Sagstad shook the defender off her back and left Georgetown nothing but to foul her and give up the penalty. Stepping up to the spot, she slotted the ball away in the bottom right corner and gave the Phoenix a lead after just five minutes.

Having often been Sagstad's partner in crime throughout the regular season, it only felt right that Brenna Swiger found herself on the end of Mari's second goal contribution of the day. Making use of the one shot on goal she had in the first half, Swiger sent a one-touch pass from Sagstad rocketing into the back of the net.

As the first period came to a close, Cumberland looked firmly ahead, but the Tigers were still fighting to keep their season alive.

The Phoenix continued to be the aggressors in the second half, challenging Daysia Thompson in goal. Accumulating double-digit corner kicks early, Cumberland made certain that they weren't going to waste.

Taking their 12th corner quickly, Grace Morris found a shot on the edge of the box, which Sagstad corralled in and laid off to an unmarked Celia Rodriguez. With the composure of a veteran striker, she faked a shot and sent the keeper, leaving the net wide open for her third goal of the season.

Gabby Jones and company all looked to put the Phoenix further ahead, but Georgetown shot stopper Daysia Thompson had other plans. Though her record gained a loss after today's matchup, she has to be given much credit for keeping the deficit at a reasonable spot, as she recorded 11 saves and only allowed three goals to a high octane Phoenix offense.

With the quarterfinals victory, Cumberland will now go to the host site, University of the Cumberlands, for their semi-finals matchup. They will play the winners of the No. 2 seed Bethel and No. 7 seed Freed-Hardeman next Wednesday at 6:00 PM CT.
