Boyd Plays Hero in Comeback Victory against Point at the Firehawk Classic

Pulaski, Tenn. - - After a rough start to their weekend, the Phoenix made the most of their second game, winning a nail biter against Point University.

After grabbing his first player of the week award for his 37 point performance against Bryan College, Demarius Boyd has continued to shoulder the scoring duties for Cumberland. He managed 23 points this game on a relatively efficient 7-14 shooting, and making little error at the charity stripe, going 7-9.

Playing much of the game in the half court, Cumberland only gathered six fast break points, though they only allowed a single fast break field goal the entire game. Making their shots in isolation or at the line, CU managed just 6 assists, being aided by the return of Jaylen Negron who dished out 3 himself.

After Boyd, three more Phoenix totaled 10 or more points: Demond Franklin (13), Jaylen Negron (11), and Doyel Cockrill III (10).

Offense was not the story of the first half, as the teams hounded one another, taking nearly ten minutes for each side to eclipse single digit points. For the remainder of the first half, the flood gates seemed to be open.

Point's Jacob Crockett helped pull his team ahead before the break with a 16 point performance. Scoring was more divided for the Phoenix however, as five players scored at least 4 points in what was a low scoring bout for both sides.

The Skyhawks looked to pull away early in the second half and keep the Phoenix at bay, but Jaylen Negron had other plans. With the deficit at 9 points, he came down and hit an 18 foot jumper to cut it to 7, before following that up with a three pointer.

Pulling the momentum onto the side of CU, it took four more minutes but the Phoenix were bound and determined to take the lead. A Demond Franklin layup just past the ten minute mark put Cumberland ahead and they never looked back after.

Point did their best, including grabbing a one point lead from a free throw with a minute left, what they did not have however was Demarius Boyd.

Starting at 1:22 in the fourth, he hit a three pointer and followed that up with 6 more points in a row for the Phoenix. Converting a pair of free throws with nine seconds left, he iced the game and gave Eric Evans II his first victory as the head coach of Cumberland University.

The Phoenix will begin a road stand this coming Thursday, November 9th. Tipoff is scheduled for 7:00 PM in Indianapolis, Indiana at the MSC Crossroads Crossover tournament.
