Phoenix fall to No. 25 Florida College, 68-64

LAKELAND, Fla.--Cumberland fell in the closing minutes for the second loss of the SEU Classic falling to No. 25 Florida College, 68-64. 

Cumberland (4-8) had a chance to knock off No. 25 Florida College, but the Falcons made a run in the second half to get up by 10 that the Phoenix had to rally to get back in it before falling in the closing minute. 

Cumberland shot 36.9% from the field and made 10 threes in the contest. Doyle Cockrill III scored a team-high 18 points with rebounds. Demarius Boyd added 14 points and Demond Franklin had eight points and for rebounds before exiting in the second half with an injury. 

No. 25 Florida College made 45.2% of their shots from the field. Cumberland held the Falcons to just 4-of-23 from three. The Falcons did out-rebound CU 45-to-40. 

Tyson Judge led the way for Florida College with a game-high 24 points on 8-of-15 shooting. Jashavius Perdue posted a double-double with 15 points and 14 rebounds. Deonte' Martinez scored 11 points off the bench. 

The Falcons scored the first three points of the 
 before Cockrill tied it with a triple from the corner. After a stop on the defensive end Stokes dished it to Franklin for a tomahawk slam and a 5-3 lead in the first couple of minutes. 

The action picked up as the Boyd made a three from the top of the key and Cockrill made his second three of the game from the same corner to tie the game at 11-11. The Phoenix started the game 3-of-5 from three in the first five minutes of play. 

After Some back and forth action gave the Falcons a 16-15 lead with 12:52 to play, Cumberland held Florida College scoreless over the next three minutes, but over that stretch Cumberland was just able to get two shots to go from Berry and a layup from Cockrill for a 19-16 lead with 10 minutes left in the half. 

Leading 19-18, Boyd drained a three from the right corner, but the Phoenix were caught in transition after the shot allowing an easy dunk. The dunk sparked a 9-0 for Florida College allowing them to lead 27-22 with 5:36 left in the half. 

Franklin finally got to the line to stop the run and in turn sent the Phoenix on a 7-0 run over text four minutes for a 29-27 lead. Florida College would score the final two points of the half to go into the break tied at 29-29. 

Cumberland started the half with a quick 5-2 spurt as Conger hit a three and Franklin made a jumper, but just after Franklin dove after a loose ball in the stands and had to exit the game with an injury. 

After Franklin exited, the Falcons went on a 9-0 run on four-straight possessions to jump up 40-34. Coffey made a jumper to stop the bleeding and Cockrill followed with his third three to get back down by one at the first media timeout of the second half. 

After the stoppage, Florida College went on a 5-0 run as Tyson Judge got hot for the Falcons scoring on 5-of-6 shots on these stretches in the second half for a 47-41 lead. 

Trailing 59-51 with seven minutes to go, the Phoenix found some momentum as Stokes threw down a two-handed slam. The dunk sparked a 6-0 run to bring it back to a two-point game with 3:53 to play. 

Down the stretch, Florida College would make a shot and Cumberland would answer. Keyshawn Robinson made a two with just over a minute to play to get within one at 65-64, but Florida College got two stops in the final minute and hit one free throw for the 68-64 final score. 

This is Cumberland's third straight loss by four or less points. 

The Phoenix return to the Dallas Floyd Phoenix Arena on Monday to host Kids Day against RV Bethel (Ind.) at 11:00 a.m.
