Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Men's Basketball Battle Warriors for Victory in Fort Wayne

Fort Wayne, Ind. - - The Cumberland men's basketball team took down Indiana Tech University in a back-and-forth contest, 80-76.

Jaheim Berry and Triston Conger both went off for the Phoenix, scoring 16 points each and grabbing the team high in rebounds and assists respectively. Indiana Tech impressed form the free throw line going 19-21, but the Phoenix's shooting was too much to handle, shooting an efficient 12-24 from beyond the arc.

Cumberland came out of the gates slow, taking more than six minutes to hit the double-digit points mark. After trailing for a large portion of the first half, the Phoenix's offense was ignited by a Kamarie Coffey three-pointer at the 13 minute mark.

Coffey's deep range shot gave CU their first lead of the game and Khi Wallace silenced the Fort Wayne crowd the following possession. The freshman from Nashville, Tennessee picked off a Warrior pass and took it coast to coast before putting Lucas Lysski on the wrong end of a posterizing dunk.

Grabbing the momentum, the Phoenix did not trail again for nearly ten minutes, despite several charges from Indiana Tech. Scoring as a whole began to move at a snail's pace as Cumberland slowed down from beyond the arc and the Warriors remained ice cold, finishing the half 1-10 from range.

As the half came to a close ITU went back ahead, but only for a short amount of time. Jaheim Berry crashed the offensive glass and converted a layup through the foul and converted his and-one opportunity to tie the game with under two minutes left in the half.

Just like he did earlier in the half, Khi Wallace jumped the passing lane and took his second steal of the half to the basket for another monstrous slam, reuniting the Phoenix with the lead just minutes after losing it. Doyel Cockrill III followed up his Pearl Cohn High School teammate with a deep three the next possession and helped Cumberland carry a 34-30 lead into the break.

Both teams traded shots coming out of the break, but the Phoenix remained comfortable in their lead. It was Cockrill again who helped grow the Cumberland margin, hitting his second deep three of the night and adding in two assists in a short span of time.

With under 14 minutes left in the half, Demarius Boyd began to turn around what would be considered a slow night for his standards. Boyd shook his defender with a pump fake and took the ball to the rim for another Phoenix and-one layup.

Hitting nothing but net with his free throw attempt, Cumberland had the largest lead of the game so far, 49-38. Though the Phoenix were surging, the Warriors maintained their composure and ensured the lead never got too far away from them.

Getting to the basket at will, Indiana Tech drew several CU players into foul trouble and took their chances at the line, going 13-15 from the charity stripe after thirty total minutes of action.

After the halfway point of the second period, the Warriors began streaking, rattling off 7 unanswered points to cut the deficit down to four points. Khi Wallace and Kamarie Coffey both made free throws to keep the Phoenix afloat, but Indiana Tech pulled ahead for the first time in a long time with just over seven minutes left to play.

Having shot more than 50% from beyond the arc on limited shots, Jaheim Berry made an instant impact in the second half. Berry came in just as the Phoenix went down and hit two threes in three possessions to take the lead back from the Warriors.

Going 5-15 from three in the first half, long range shooting was the key to Cumberland's success in the second half. Boyd, Berry, Cockrill III, Coffey, and Keyshawn Robinson all combined to shoot 7-9 from outside in the second half, keeping Indiana Tech at an arm's length as they shot a poor 1-17 from three in the same amount of time.

The final seconds of the game gave some scare to the Phoenix as Dallas Roberts from ITU hit just the second three of the game for the Warriors to make it a one possession game. Doyel Cockrill III was fouled and had two shots from the free throw line, missing the first, but showed maturity and gathered himself to sink the following shot and make it 80-76, which is where the game would end.

Cumberland will be at home this weekend, facing former conference foes University of Tennessee Southern on Saturday at 2:00 PM.
