Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

In-form Sagstad Scores Four as the Phoenix Roll Past Bryan College

Dayton, Tenn.-- The Cumberland women' soccer team faced off against in-state rivals, Bryan College. In another strong showing, the Phoenix walked away with eight goals and picked up their second clean sheet of the season.

Straight out of the gates the Lions were on their heels and the Phoenix took advantage of it. Only two minutes into the game the Phoenix won a penalty, which Mari Sagstad stepped up to and dispatched, putting CU ahead early.

From there the goal scoring would be far from over, as Gabby Jones then jumped on a ball through the defense and doubled the CU lead.

Soon after that Mari Sagstad scored back-to-back goals, giving her a first half hat trick. First, she added another penalty kick and followed that up with a goal from a rebounding ball on a corner.

Matching their effort in the first half, the Phoenix would manage another four goals in the second half. Keeping announcers busy, the pairing of Sagstad and Jones both added a goal in the opening twenty minutes of the second half which put Cumberland ahead by six.

The final Phoenix to add to the tally were Brenna Swiger and Hailey Burroughs. Burroughs scored her first goal of the season as the Lions defense struggled to cope with the Phoenix's high line of pressure.

With minutes to play, Swiger scored the eighth and final goal of the afternoon. Drawing a foul near the edge of the 18-yard box, Marie Bathe delivered a delightful cross into the box which Swiger headed strongly past the goalkeeper.

Despite a strong effort from the Lions' keepers with 14 saves in total, the Phoenix's attack proved to be overwhelming. Taking 36 shots and putting 22 of them on goal tends to be a formula for success and Cumberland never looked back, only allowing four shots all day.

The Phoenix will have to take on two more road opponents before they are back at home, with their next matchup being in Cleveland, Georgia. The no.18 ranked women's soccer team at Truett McConnell hosts Cumberland next Saturday, August 26th.
