Lebanon, Tenn.-- Cumberland sweeps day two of the Phoenix Classic with a 3-1 win over Madonna and a 3-1 win over William Carey.

Layla Young and Haley Mitchell combined for 20 of Cumberland's 39 kills, with Young hitting a fantastic .450. Libero Kaleigh Glass led all players with 13 digs.
The Crusaders were led by Tauri Hintz at the net with 11 kills and Karlee Stroll in the back row with nine digs.Â
Cumberland struggled at the net in the first, hitting a .000 as a team with nine kills compared to Madonna's 13. The teams traded points down the stretch with neither side leading by more than three until a 5-1 run from Madonna created some separation at 21-15. The Crusaders protected their lead from then on to earn the 25-21 set victory.
The Phoenix cleaned up their offense to take a five point lead at 15-10 and control the momentum for the latter half of the second set. Young was powerful at the net, putting away four kills to help CU to the 25-21 win and tying the match 1-1.Â
The Crusaders took an early lead in the third with a 5-0 run, during which the Phoenix made four attack errors. Cumberland fought hard through the middle stages to cut the deficit and took their first lead of the match at 14-13 with the help of two huge swings from Mitchell.Â
A late-set five point run from Madonna gave them a decent lead, but the Phoenix fought back hard to earn the final four points of the match for a 25-22 win.Â
The Phoenix were determined to close out the game in the fourth, posting their highest attack percentage of the match at .276 with 12 kills and only four errors.

CU faced a five point disadvantage at 11-6, forcing them to burn a timeout. The Phoenix earned the next four points out of the break to even out the score and redirect the game's energy.
Cumberland completely controlled the second half of the set with their attackers coming alive and the backline protecting the court. Back-to-back kills from Lauren Galvan and Hazel Konkel ended the set in CU's favor 25-19.
Vs. William Carey
The Phoenix were led by Haley Mitchell at the net with 13 kills, followed by Hazel Konkel and Layla Young with 12 apiece. Kayla Andre added eight kills and six blocks. Kaleigh Glass had another great defensive game leading all players with 18 digs.
 Set one was closely contested without any significant runs until the halfway mark when CU strung together five points to set themselves up for a set victory. The Phoenix led by as many as six with the help of their tight defense and ultimately closed it out with a 25-21 score.
The Phoenix carried their momentum into the second, climbing to a 12-6 lead and controlling the set's pace through the middle stages.Â
William Carey capitalized on a few Phoenix attacking errors down the wire for an 18-15 game, but Manoella Gomes reignited CU's flame with a clever setter dump.Â
It came down to the final few points and the Crusaders chipped away at the deficit to take their first lead of the game at 21-20. The Phoenix used a timeout in the last few moments of the set, but the Crusaders held on for a 25-21 win.
The Phoenix struggled defensively to start the third, allowing the Crusaders to go on a run and create some distance. Konkel ended the scoring drought with a sharp cross-court kill, starting a string of points for the Phoenix to tie it up 16-16.
Cumberland showed some intensity at the net to go on an important run late in the half but the Crusaders answered right back. The teams went back and forth, battling into extra points until back-to-back William Carey errors ended it in CU's favor 26-24.
 The Phoenix took Elaine Shaneyfelt on a five point serving run in the fourth, forcing William Carey into a break. Kayla Andre and Layla Young combined for a big block immediately out of the timeout and CU continued to spread their lead.Â
The Crusaders benefited off of a trio of CU attacking errors to bring the score within four at 16-12 but the Phoenix adjusted accordingly and came out on top with a big 25-15 victory.
The Phoenix will wrap up the tournament tomorrow starting at 3:30 with a match against St. Mary. They will play the last game of the day at 7:30 versus Faulkner.Â
