Phoenix Fall in Battle Against (RV) Milligan

Box Score Lebanon, Tenn. - - Opening up their regular season at home, the Phoenix hosted the Buffaloes of Milligan University. A 3-0 scoreline went in the favor of the visiting Buffaloes, as the Phoenix failed to capitalize on their chances.

Through the opening minutes of the game the Phoenix did well to control the ball, however as the game settled down momentum began to swing the way of Milligan. Cumberland possessed the ball high up the field leading to several chances, but lacked the breakthrough they needed

In the fifteenth minute the Phoenix were making a charge down the field, but lost possession with numbers forward and the Buffaloes countered quickly. After a through ball over the top, Boikaego Mbaakanyi found the ball Milligan had been looking forward to and put them ahead one goal to none.

The first half wouldn't finish without drama though as a Buffalo was subbed off in the first half and mistakenly took the field again. Within the same minute he assisted a goal, which would be disallowed after the officials convened.

Cumberland recovered and started to pull the tide back their way, when in the 38th minute John Azar struck a left footed shot into the bottom right corner. Freshman Phillip Schmidtke jumped onto the rebound off the keeper and scored, but would be called offsides.

Robbie Lyons and the other Phoenix managed several big chances in the second period, but Cumberland never found the elusive goal they sought after. Both teams played well defensively, all things considered, the Buffaloes however were the definition of clinical in front of goal. Cumberland will rue the chances they missed as they actually shot five more times in total than MU.

Scoring in quick succession, Milligan cemented their win with goals in the 66th and 70th minute, seeing Alex Panner and Santiago Corral score to make it 3-0.

The Phoenix will have a chance to return to form as they travel to Faulkner University in Montgomery, Alabama. Kickoff is set for 3:00 PM next Wednesday, August, 30th.
