Phoenix Run Wild in 50-6 win over Kentucky Christian

LEBANON, Tenn.--Cumberland ran wild all over Kentucky Christian as the Phoenix stood strong and rout the Knights 50-6 at Nokes-Lasater Stadium on Saturday evening.

Cumberland (2-1) racked up 521 yards of total offense and 385 on the ground. Treylon Sheppard and Nick Burge both went over 100 yards rushing the ball. Sheppard went for 132 yards on 24 carries with two scores and Burge went for an even 100 yards on 16 touches and a touchdown. Tim Pannell added 68 yards and two touchdowns.

Quarterback Luke Holloway completed 11-of-15 passes for 139 yards and a touchdown while adding 65 yards on the ground. Elijah Gaskin was the recipient of the passing touchdown with one grab for 10 yards.

The defense played well again holding Kentucky Christian to six points and just 157 yards of offense, after three quarters the Knights had just 58 yards. Joey Samples led the team in tackled with 10, the first double-figure tackles performance by a Phoenix this season. He also had 2.5 tackles for a loss and a fumble recovery.

Kion Threalkill and Keenan Burnley each added an interception as the Phoenix had three takeaways defensively.

Cumberland got it rolling early and often in this game. The Phoenix scored on the opening possession. Isaac Finch scored on a six-yard jet sweep to get around the Knights defense and put Cumberland up 7-0.

After a quick drive by the Knights, Cumberland went 61-yards down field to score. Tim Pannell capped the eight play drive with a 10-yard score for a 14-0 lead after the first.

At the end of the first quarter and start of the second quarter, Cumberland was feeding Sheppard as he kept moving the chains before going up and over for a touchdown and a 20-0 lead.

The next drive, Threalkill made a diving interception to take the ball away from the Knights and give the Cumberland offense the ball. Cumberland went 77-yards down the field on five plays before Holloway found Nate Stephens for a pass. Stephens fumbled the ball and Gaskin jumped on it in the endzone for another CU score and extending the lead to 26-0.

Again two plays later, this time Burnley made an insane grab going out of bounds for the pick and a short field for the Phoenix to work with. Cumberland nickel and dimed their way into the red zone. The drive stalled on the goal line and Christian Carter tacked on a 22-yard field goal for a 29-0 lead where the score stood at half.

Kentucky Christian received the opening kick of the second half, but two plays later Lance Matthews forced a fumble that Samples jumped on. The Phoenix again fed Sheppard for five straight rushes before he found paydirt from six yards out to push it to 36-0.

After a short drive for KCU, Cumberland handed the ball off to Burge seven straight times as he went 61 yards down field. He scored on a four yard touchdown rush and gave the Phoenix a 43-0 lead.

At the end of the third and start of the fourth, CU worked their way into field goal range, but a personal foul penalty on a field goal try gave Cumberland another crack at the endzone and Pannell scampered in for his second score.

The next drive, the Knights finally got on the board for the first time in four games going 14 plays and 57 yards for a touchdown and the final score of 50-6.

The Phoenix are off next week, but will be in action at home on Saturday, September 30th to open up Mid-South Conference play against Campbellsville.
