Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Phoenix Take Down the Grizzlies in Georgia

Lawrenceville, Ga. - - With a large pool of data coming into this game, both coaches had a good idea of how the other would play. With that in mind, the first twenty minutes saw little action outside of a singular meaningful shot on goal for each side.

The x-factor that the Phoenix had however was Brenda Cernas who, as many will know, has a certain affinity for important games. Early on she had the Phoenix's most lethal shot on goal, however, it was her passing that put CU ahead.

Carrying the ball through the Grizzly defense, she passed up on a shot at the edge of the box, opting to pass to an unmarked Marie Bathe. The captain took a touch and before Matilda Johansson could blink, Bathe's effort was sailing into the back of the net.

From that point forward the Phoenix had the lion's share of momentum, putting as many shots on goal in the final 15 minutes as they did the first 30. Cumberland took a 1-0 lead into the break, though the Grizzlies were still threatening.

Never lacking the edge that GGC were struggling to find, the Phoenix were quick to locate their second goal. Just six minutes into the second half, Mari Sagstad finished off a cross from Lucia Mei to take back the title as the Phoenix's leading goalscorer.

Brenda Cernas came back to put her name back in the spotlight once more, this time freezing Matilda Johansson. Weaving through the defense as she did all day, she mimicked her first shot on goal that was saved, this time though it was too good for the GGC shot stopper.

Attempting a comeback shortly after Cernas' goal, the Grizzlies won a penalty after a stray tackle in the box. Without attempting a shot all day, Kyara Arementa's effort wouldn't force a save; hitting off the crossbar, the shot rebounded out and sealed what would eventually become the Phoenix's eighth shutout of the season.

Over the course of the game Cumberland held strong in defense, allowing just two shots, one being the penalty attempt. Opposing that, the Phoenix recorded 22 shots and placed an astounding 15 on goal.

Returning to conference play, Cumberland will stay on the road and face off against the Tigers from Campbellsville University, who are receiving votes at the time of writing. Kickoff is scheduled for 5:00 PM this Saturday, September 30th.
