Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Phoenix Fall as Tigers Hold the Fort at Home

Campbellsville, Kentucky - - Continuing their conference play, the Phoenix hit the road to challenge the Campbellsville Tigers. Taking part in a defensive battle, Cumberland got bit by the Tigers early and could never find a goal to level it, ending 1-0 for the hosts.

Facing an opponent for the second time in their previous three games, Cumberland had no easy task in front of them with the Tigers looking to defend their home turf. Throughout the history of this rivalry, games have lacked a large number of goals but most definitely are never shy of action.

This time though the Phoenix were put in the passenger's seat early, as the Tigers found their breakthrough in the 16th minute. Playing the ball over the top of the defense seemed to be the most threatening form of attack for the home side and using that play, Nathan Schmidli scored a world class volley across his body, as well as the goal.

Both sides' goalkeepers saw little action outside of that one shot, as both CU teams only managed two shots on goal in the first half. Robbie Lyons provided the most lethal shot on goal for the Phoenix before the break, as his single shot smacked off the woodwork and caused a large scrum in the box.

Wishing to maintain their lead, the Tigers played more reserved in the second half and only recorded a single shot on goal after they went ahead. Playing against that deep line meant that much of the offensive duties fell onto the pair of Cathal Coyne and Alejandro Carrillo, who looked to pick out attackers with their long passing ability.

The match slowed down greatly as the Phoenix's were chasing that missing goal. Their best chance of the game came in the final five minutes as Kam Stanley, making his first start of the season, found himself on the end of a cross from Mark Donaldson. In heartbreaking fashion his header smashed into the crossbar and John Azar's follow up was blocked.

Ending in jubilation for the Tigers, the Phoenix are left with a bad taste in their mouth as luck seemed to fall the opposite way of them on the night. They will have little time to recover though as they are back on the field this weekend hosting Oakland City University.

Kickoff is scheduled for 3:00 PM on Saturday, September 30th.
