The Phoenix Drop Home Contest to the Patriots, 3-1

Lebanon, Tenn.-- The Phoenix fall to the Patriots in four as they move to a 3-1 conference record. Exciting rallies and a lively crowd made for a big time Mid-South Conference battle in the Dallas Floyd Phoenix Arena.
Kaleigh Glass was impressive from beginning to end, staying aggressive on defense to pick up a game-high 23 digs. Haley Mitchell had another solid outing with 15 kills and Nicole Roeder recorded a double-double with 19 assists and 14 digs.
The Cumberlands' setter Kendall Arnold led her team with 37 assists and 17 digs. Outside attacker Allyson Grava also went for a double-double with 14 kills and 14 digs.
The teams hung closely together as set one progressed, with neither side holding more than a two point advantage. Both teams made smart offensive moves down the stretch as the Phoenix hit a .364 and the Patriots finished at .278.
After trading points throughout, the final push saw no clear winner. Cumberland made an all important 4-1 run late in the frame during which the Patriots collected a trio of errors. The run gave the Phoenix enough of an edge to secure the victory at 25-22.
The Patriots ripped set two open with an 8-4 lead as Cumberland was hurt by a number of team miscommunications. The Phoenix recollected in a timeout and came out of it with determination, earning the next four points to even out the score.
The Patriots made a swift recovery and recaptured the set advantage, rattling off seven straight for a 17-10 lead.
From then on, the Phoenix hustled to make up for lost points but were never able to fully dig themselves out of the hole. Despite leading in kills, the Phoenix doubled the Patriots' attack error count which heavily contributed to the 25-18 loss.
The third frame was tightly contested as the Phoenix made vast improvements to clean up their side of the net. The Patriots had answers to all of Cumberland's scoring spurts, making for an exciting finish.
Glass' all-out defense kept Cumberland alive through multiple high intensity rallies but a 4-0 run on the Patriots' side closed it in their favor at 25-21.
The Patriots carried their momentum into the fourth frame as they looked to close the game there. The Phoenix were forced to burn a timeout at the 10-6 score and the break proved effective as a block and kill from Kayla Andre cut the deficit to two.
Once again, the Patriots adjusted accordingly and widened the distance with a 5-2 run. From then on, the Patriots stayed consistent and ended the game with a big swing at 25-19.
The Phoenix will be on the road for their next match as they take on the Campbellsville Tigers in Campbellsville, Ky. next Tuesday, October 3. The game is scheduled for a 6 PM start.
