Waleska, Ga. - - The Phoenix headed south again for their next opponent, this time facing off against Reinhardt University in Georgia. In control of the game from the first whistle to the last, Cumberland couldn't find the back of the net, having to settle for a 0-0 draw.
Â
After having a great start to their last game against Faulkner, before going down a man with a red card, the Phoenix looked to find that same rhythm again. Coming in for his first start in several games,
Victor Ramirez was the Phoenix impressing the most early on in this match.
Â
Taking the ball up and down the wing, he managed more shots on goal in the first fifteen minutes by himself than the whole of the Eagles. Becoming a theme through the first half though, the Phoenix were in control, lacking nothing but the go-ahead goal.
Â
Reinhardt did well defensively to keep the Phoenix out, though they lacked real threat going forward, leading to very high possession for Cumberland.
Â
The second half did little in the way of correcting the lack of goals from both sides. Reading very similarly to the first half statistically, the Phoenix outplayed their opponents in nearly every box score stat, except the most crucial one, goals.
Â
John Azar had the most promising shot of the half, but to the visiting fans' heartbreak, sent the ball inches over the crossbar. Settling for shots at times after that, Cumberland will rue their mistakes as they had to take the shutout into the final whistle.
Â
Reading from the box score can be viewed in two different ways: either seeing the Phoenix control the game with 19 shots to the Eagles 5, or seeing the Eagles showcase something akin to a defensive masterclass. Either way, both teams will walk away from this game with a draw, leaving Cumberland still searching for their elusive first victory.
Â
The Phoenix's schedule won't lighten at all as their next matchup sees them face off against last season's MSC regular season champions, UT Southern. Kickoff is scheduled for next Wednesday, September 6
th, at 3:00 PM.
