Game Recap: Women's Volleyball |

Women's Volleyball Splits day one of the Amber Mcclure Fayerweather Tournament

Upland, Ind.-- Cumberland women's volleyball splits day one of the Amber Mcclure Fayerweather Tournament. The Phoenix started the day with a 3-1 comeback win over Roosevelt University, but dropped in three to IU East to close it.

Vs. Roosevelt
The Phoenix opened with an exciting reverse sweep win over Roosevelt. After dropping the first two, Cumberland fought their way to win three back-to-back sets.
Nicole Roeder recorded her fifth double-double of the season with 30 assists and 12 digs. Hazel Konkel was solid throughout with 13 kills and four blocks.
Roosevelt's defense impressed in the first, leaving little room for the Phoenix attackers to connect on swings. Cumberland used a timeout at the 11-4 score, but the Lakers scored three straight points out of the break to keep the separation.
The Phoenix found some energy late in the set with a 5-1 run but were ultimately unable to recover that early deficit. The Lakers closed the set with a kill from Yuliia Shchepkina at 25-16.
Cumberland had a much better start to the second, matching Roosevelt point-for-point down the stretch.
The final push saw a number of unforced errors on both sides for a 23-23 score, but the Lakers finished strong with a kill and an ace to secure the win.
The Phoenix were haunted by errors through the middle stages of set three, allowing the Lakers to create some distance. Cumberland's offense came alive at just the right moment, nailing a string of four kills to take a crucial 24-23 lead. Lauren Galvan ended the set with an ace as the Phoenix narrowly avoided the sweep.
Cumberland had all of the momentum going into the fourth, taking an 8-2 lead with their first six points coming from kills. The Lakers were undeterred, however, and fought their way through an 8-1 run to tie it at 11-11.
The teams traded punches through the middle, but CU controlled the pace in the critical stretch to force a fifth set at 25-19.
Cumberland took an early lead of the deciding set, opening it up with back-to-back kills and an ace. The Phoenix would protect that edge throughout, with the Lakers unable to fully recover and posting their lowest attack percentage at .100. Camilla Martinho contributed to the final two points, earning a kill and block to close it at 15-11.

Vs. IU East
The Phoenix put up a solid fight to avoid the sweep, but ultimately fell in three to IU East. Konkel had another good match with nine kills and three blocks. Kaleigh Glass went for a game-high 10 digs.
Cumberland's offense struggled to keep pace with the Red Wolves in the first, hitting a .069 compared to IU East's .229.
The Phoenix faced an uphill battle around the middle stages when a series of errors sent the Red Wolves on a ten point run for a 19-14 edge.
Cumberland cleaned up their side late in the set and threatened to take the lead at 23-22, but Jessica Swimm connected on a pair of swings to secure IU East's win.
Set two was tightly contested with neither side going on any significant runs throughout. The final push was neck and neck, running into extra points. A CU error at the net followed by a Red Wolves kill ended it at 29-27 and gave IU East a two set advantage.
The Red Wolves made the first break in scoring with a six point run to create some separation in the third.
The Phoenix attackers found their groove halfway through and flipped the script. Kills from Mitchell, Galvan, and Young gave CU the lead at 16-13.
Cumberland held an edge until the Red Wolves came back to even the score at 22-22 with a string of kills, making it another close battle to end it. IU East earned the final three points with the help of a CU service error and two more kills.

It'll be a quick turnaround for the Phoenix tomorrow with a big matchup against RV Taylor University at 10:30 AM. They will close out the tournament that evening with another RV matchup, this one being against Indiana University Kokomo at 3:30 PM.
