Lebanon, Tenn. - - Coming into the game riding a three game losing streak, the Phoenix found little in the way of favors as they had to match up with the No. 3 ranked Campbellsville Tigers. Battling for momentum all night, Cumberland dropped their second game of the conference season 88-75.
Kayla Gordon scored 29 points en route to her third straight game of 20+, while
Emaleigh Tarpley had her best performance of her young career. The freshman from Manchester, Tennessee was second-leading scorer for the Phoenix with 13 points and 4 rebounds.
Steaming hot from the start, the Tigers quickly made back-to-back layups and a three pointer to force an early Cumberland timeout. After the break though the Phoenix began to slow down the highly-touted Tiger offense, managing to work themselves into a 10-7 lead just as the first quarter eclipsed its halfway point.
Campbellsville would not be stopped for long however, as they quickly turned their three point deficit into a 12 point lead to begin the second quarter. Playing the role of firefighter,
Maddie Brillhart trailed her inbound pass up the floor and hit a contested three to put a stop to the Tiger's momentum.
After her make, both CU's traded baskets for the next several minutes, including stellar quarters for the Phoenix's two leading scorers
Kayla Gordon and
Lindsey Freeman. Going into the half Cumberland had the lion's share of momentum as they managed six straight points before the break and after trailing by as much as 16 in the quarter, only trailed 42 to 35 at the half.
Continuing to be a game of runs, the Tigers looked close to unstoppable in the opening parts of the third quarter, scoring 15 straight points without missing a shot from the field. With nearly six minutes off the board,
Myajae Eubanks was the only Phoenix to get on the board, enduring a 19-2 scoring run in that time.
Again Brillhart stepped up and hit a big shot from beyond the arc to keep the deficit under 20 points, seeing Cumberland take a 69-50 game into the final quarter. Though they had to play from behind for much of the game, the Phoenix showed great resilience as freshman
Emaleigh Tarpley scored 8 points in the first several minutes of the period and was aided by the ever-present
Kayla Gordon again.
Cumberland fought till the very end of regulation but the uber efficient Campbellsville offense was too much for the home side, falling 88-75.
The Phoenix will be back in action this upcoming Thursday, January 18th, playing another ranked conference opponent in the University of the Cumberlands. Tipoff is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. in Williamsburg, Kentucky.
