Cockrill Goes for 30 Points in Road Loss to No. 6 Patriots

WILLIAMSBURG, Ky.-- Despite Doyel Cockrill and Demarius Boyd's combined 50 points, the Phoenix were unable to slow down the No. 6 Patriots.
Cumberland (5-12, 1-2) suffers a conference loss on the road to the well-rounded offense of the Patriots (17-1, 3-0). The Cumberlands' cohesive effort at the net led to 57.6% shooting from the field while the Phoenix struggled to replicate their runs.
Cockrill had another big night, surpassing the career-high he set last weekend with a 30 point game. He went 10-15 from the field while also adding six triples to lead all players. Demaruis Boyd ended the night with 20 points and four assists.
The Patriots' offensive force featured five double-digit shooters, led by Matthew Cromer with 18 points.
The Patriots came out strong, setting the tone with a triple from Cromer that ignited a twenty-minute battle from beyond the arc. Both sides would finish the half with five triples.
Buckets continued to fall for the Patriots as they established a seven point lead after four minutes. In pivotal moments, Cockrill stepped up from the top of the arc, sinking two consecutive shots that propelled the Phoenix to their first lead of the half at 13-12. Cumberland continued to connect from the wings with Kamarie Coffey checking in to earn his first triple and Cockrill following it up with his third for a four point lead.
The final seven minutes of the half saw the Patriots dominating with a 25-7 run, capitalizing on seven Cumberland turnovers. They headed into the break with a comfortable 15 point lead, holding the Phoenix at bay while dominating their own possessions.
The Patriots began the second half with a commanding 21-6 run, establishing a 30-point difference while the Phoenix endured a nearly six-minute scoring drought.
Boyd woke the Phoenix up with a swing from the top of the key to bring the difference under 30. This sparked a resurgence from the Phoenix as they chipped away at the score with an 11-4 run, ending with Julio Pascal connecting from the line after an offensive rebound foul.
Despite their efforts, Cumberland remained within 25 points but couldn't break through the Patriots' lineup of shooters. The game concluded with a steal and slam from Brady Bell, sealing the final score at 100-77.
Cumberland will stay in Kentucky, heading to the Georgetown area to face the No. 17 Tigers on Saturday. Tip-off is scheduled for a 2:00 PM CT following the women's game at noon.
