Men's Soccer Escape the Lions with 80th Minute Goal

Box Score Henderson, Tenn. - - The Cumberland Men's soccer team escaped with a win as a last minute goal from Alejandro Carrillo helped to secure the Phoenix a win over Freed-Hardeman.

The first half had little of note happen, as neither side would threaten the goal too greatly. Opening the game with the first shot attempt was actually the Lions, though Cumberland quickly put themselves in the driver's seat. The Phoenix answered with a shot of their own in the following minute, though there was no shot on goal until more than 20 minutes into the game when Philipp Scmidtke had his attempt saved.

Registering the final shot on frame in the first half, ending what was a slow 45 minutes, Mark Donaldson put a shot in the bottom right corner of the net being saved by the Freed goalkeeper.

Shots finally began to pour in as soon as the second half started, beginning with a shot on goal from Brima Kamara just thirty seconds after the break. It took 12 more shots and sheer dominance from the Phoenix before the deadlock was broken.

Finding room down the right wing, Luis Cerejo took his space going forward and delivered a cross with pace onto the head of a flying Alejandro Carrillo. The sophomore who is playing just his third game of the season, smashed his header into the back of the net and delivered the breakthrough that CU severely needed.

After that point Cumberland threatened with a few more chances, but the game ultimately ended in that 1-0 score, helping to push them to 12-1, while still remaining perfect in conference.

Cumberland will be back in action next Friday for their largest matchup since the Dalton State game, as they take on fellow MSC Top 15 ranked team, University of the Cumberlands. Kickoff is scheduled for 3:30 PM.
