Phoenix Draw with No. 10 Patriots Behind Two First Half CU Goals

WILLIAMSBURG, Ky.--Cumberland Men's Soccer scored two first half goals, but the 10th-ranked Patriots responded with two second half goals to end in a 2-2 draw.

Cumberland (12-1-1, 3-0-1 MSC) earned a point in the conference standings with the draw with two matches left in the conference season. As it stands right now, the Phoenix are in the lead with 10 points with Bethel behind them with seven points. The Phoenix will meet the Wildcats in a big match next week with conference championship implications on the line as well as hosting the conference tournament.

The Phoenix came out strong in the first half as Philipp Schmidtke and Jostin Angel scored in the first half, but the Patriots were the aggressor in the second half coming out to tie it quick and still pressuring CU the final 35 minutes.

The Patriots outshot Cumberland 19-8 in the contest with CU putting four shots on goal to the Cumberlands six. Both sides had lots of chances as the Patriots worked 11 corners to the Phoenix's seven.

Cumberland capitalized on two corner kicks in the first half to jump out to a 2-0 lead after the first half.

The Phoenix struck first as Philipp Schmidtke netted his seven the goal of the season off an assist from Luis Cerejo on a corner kick in the 15th minute.

Just before the half ended, Lyons played a good ball in and Jostin Angel punched it in to lift CU up 2-0 at the break.

Out of the half, the Patriots stormed back into the game quickly. Rodrigo Riveros scored five minutes into the second half and Salvador Martinez tied the game with 35 minutes left to play.

The rest of the game, the Patriots pressured Cumberland heavily on the defensive end, but Cumberland fought off each chance to get the draw and earn a point in the conference standings.

Cumberland will host 17th-ranked Bethel next Wednesday at Lindsey Donnell Stadium.
