16th-Ranked Georgetown beats Phoenix in Slugfest

LEBANON, Tenn.—Cumberland and 16th-ranked Georgetown battled for four quarters, but the Tigers held on to get a 14-9 win over the Phoenix.

Cumberland (5-2, 1-2 MSC) had a dog fight with the Tigers battling on both ends of the ball. The Phoenix posted more yards than Georgetown going 284 yards and had the ball for 34 minutes of game time. CU ran for an even-100 yards and threw for 184 yards in the game.

Luke Holloway completed 16-of-26 passes for 184 and one touchdown. He also led the team in rushing yards with 49 on 19 carries. Kaiden Hatcher caught six passes for 52 yards. Jarrius Rogers caught two passes for 35 yards and a touchdown and Isaiah O'Neil caught two passes for 35 yards.

Georgetown went for 248 yards of total offense on the day. Quarterback Gehrig Slunaker was extremely efficient completing 12-of-15 passes for 109 yards. Darius Neal was a workhorse in the backfield carrying the ball 20 times for 126 yards and two touchdowns.

Defensively, Boston Follis was all over the field leading the team in tackles with 12 and a sack. Demarkus Brown had eight tackles and Knox Watson and Joey Samples made five tackles.

The Phoenix received the opening kick and had their opening drive stall out near midfield. The Tigers gained possession after a punt and moved the ball 62-yards downfield capped off with a 28-yard touchdown rush from Neal for an early 7-0 lead.

After a couple of wasted possessions, the Phoenix took back over with good field position at their own 44-yard line. CU moved the chains once, but Holloway lost the football on a fumble recovered by the Tigers to end the first quarter.

The Phoenix defense stood strong and forced another Tigers punt. Cumberland drove the ball down the field on 15 plays, chewing up seven minutes of clock. The Phoenix were forced to kick a field goal after being stopped inside the five yard line and settled for three points on a 21-yard field goal from Jack Kantner to make it 7-3 with 6:49 left in the half.

Georgetown got a good return on the kick and moved the ball down the field with ease. Neal rushed in his second touchdown of the game from 14-yards out on 4th and 1 to give GC a 14-3 lead going into the half.

The Cumberland defense played extremely well in the second half not giving up a point the rest of the game. The Phoenix got their opening possession after a punt in the third and again took over nine minutes of clock off the board woking into the redzone. Again, the drive stalled at the 10-yard line and Kantner lined up for a 26-yard field goal that the Tigers blocked to keep points off the board.

To start the fourth, Cumberland forced a three-and-out to get the ball back. Cumberland agin worked down the field into the redzone. A couple of penalties backed CU up on a 4th and long situation in a spot where Cumberland needed to get points to get back into the game. Holloway threw a heave to Jarrius Rogers and he went up and made the grab for a Cumberland touchdown. The point-after attempt was missed, but put Cumberland within striking distance at 14-9 with 10:21 left.

The defense got Cumberland the ball back with 5:28 left. Cumberland moved the chains once, but had to punt it back with 2:51 to go.

Again the defense came up big and the Tigers were forced to punt and CU took over inside their own 10-yard line with 1:48 left. Cumberland however were shut down on four straight downs and could not move the chains turning the ball over allowing Georgetown to get the win 14-9.

The Phoenix will be on the road next week to take on the University of the Cumberlands. Kick-off will be slated for 5:00 p.m. central time.
