Phoenix Take Care of Business in Four Sets Against Georgetown

Box Score LEBANON, Tenn. - - The Cumberland Women's volleyball team took on Georgetown and despite a strong comeback effort from the Tigers it was the Phoenix taking the match in four sets.

After a back and forth start to the match, the Phoenix finally put themselves in charge of the first set with a big three point swing at 12-9. Keeping that momentum flowing, Cumberland did not allow the Tigers to score more than one point at a time for the remainder of the set, en route to a 25-15 first set victory.

The second set saw Cumberland jump out to a 6-1 lead, though the set played much closer than its predecessor. After growing that initial five point lead each team went on a combined seven multi-point runs, the largest of which again put the Phoenix in the driver's seat.

Georgetown brought the deficit down to just a single point, 17-16, but the Phoenix rode a four-point streak from that point onto a 25-18 victory. Up to that point Cumberland led the game in several major categories; Lila Cade had a game-high 7 kills, Skylar Rivers led with 11 digs, and Manoella Gomes was tied for the game-high in assists with 10.

Set three was all Tigers from the get-go as they ran out to a 7-0 lead, only being halted by a service error. Despite the large deficit to come back from, the Phoenix scratched and clawed their way back into the match to bring it all the way back to 9-7. That two point gap seemed to follow the Phoenix for the rest of the set as they brought the gap down to a single point just once, after which Georgetown then went on another big four point run, helping them take the set 25-19.

After dropping the third set the Phoenix looked like a team that was re-energized in the fourth, going out to a big 6-1 lead, similar to GC the set before. Cumberland needed that big lead as the Tigers eyeballed that fifth set, bringing the forth all the way back to 12-12.

Memories of Cumberland's last conference match against the Tigers must have been playing in the Phoenix's heads as they quickly rallied and put five straight points on the board to give themselves some cushion.  Finally after four hard fought sets it came down to a Georgetown attack which the CU block put out of play to take the match in four.

The Phoenix will play their final regular season match this Friday, hosting Senior Day activities before their match against the University of the Cumberlands.
