Men's Basketball Falls to William Carey at the Jimmy Faulkner Classic

MONTGOMERY, Ala.-- Cumberland Men's Basketball Falls to William Carey at the Jimmy Faulkner Classic.

Cumberland (0-2) got off to a hot start leading the Crusaders of William Carey by as much as 15 points in the first half. The Crusaders tied it after the half and the Phoenix also led for 78.8% of the game but did not capitalize in the last minutes of the game. Cumberland shot 43.8% from the field, 31.8% from three, and 75% from the free throw line.

Demarius Boyd led the Phoenix in scoring with 23 points shooting 10-19 from the field and 3-7 from beyond the arc. Triston Conger had 14 points, eight rebounds, seven assists, and five steals. Cooper Abner also recorded 12 points shooting 5-7 from the field and recorded six rebounds and an assist.

Cumberland got off to a hot start against William Carey going up 23-14 in the first nine minutes. The Phoenix shot 59.7% from the field going 11-19 and also shooting 5-8 from the three line with Baqi Lecky hitting three of those. Baqi Lecky led CU with 11 points and shooting a perfect three for three from the field and two for two from the foul line in the first 10 minutes. Khi Wallace and Jalen Anglin also shot a perfect 100% both going 2-2 from the field with a combined 10 points with five a piece.  

At the end of the first half, the Crusaders went on a 13-4 run to erase Cumberland's lead down to six points. The run was led by a Zandon Haralson basket and a follow up free throw for the three point play. The Phoenix led by as much as 15 points midway through the first half. Demarius Boyd led the Phoenix at halftime with 12 points, he was followed up by Lecky with 11 points who shot 100% from the field and the three point line. Triston Conger led with five assists and also had three rebounds. 

Triston Conger opened up the half with another steal and fast break that was scored by Riggs Abner. The Crusaders hit a couple more three pointers and recorded two offensive rebounds to cut the lead down to five at 49-44. Conger recorded another steal and fast break to strengthen the lead back to seven points. CU went on an 8-0 run to extend their lead to 63-52. Out of a timeout, William Carey hit a three and a basket and foul to erase the deficit to three points again. A series of ties in the game unfolded and the Phoenix drew a blocking foul and made the basket and the free throw to take the lead by three. 

Boyd scored his 19th point on a fast break to bring it back within one and Conger scored on a layup and called foul to take the lead by one again in a series of lead changes and ties. A Cam Brown three pointer for the Crusaders caused William Carey to lead by four points with three minutes left to go in the game. William Carey jumped to an eight point lead and the Phoenix answered back with a Boyd layup to bring it back within six. The Crusaders jumped to a nine point lead after a couple of turnovers by the Phoenix. The Phoenix could not answer back and gave up a 15 point lead to lose against William Carey 96-83.

The Phoenix will be back in action Saturday, Nov. 2 against Faulkner University at 7:00 PM in Montgomery, Ala.
