Cumberland Battles Hard but Falls Short to Brescia 68-58

OWENSBORO, Ky.--Cumberland Women's Basketball had a strong third quarter to cut into a double-digit deficit, but Brescia held off and pulled away late to take down the Phoenix 68-58.

Ever Walker led the Phoenix offense, scoring 12 points on 5-of-10 shooting, including a three-pointer and a perfect free-throw attempt. Kayla Gordon contributed a double-double with 11 points and a team-high 13 rebounds, showcasing her dominance on the boards. Faith Colston added 10 points, hitting two from beyond the arc and collecting seven rebounds.

Cumberland showed strength on the boards, pulling down 44 total rebounds, including 18 offensive boards that kept plays alive. However, shooting efficiency proved challenging, as they hit only 33% from the field and struggled from beyond the arc with just 4-of-22 three-pointers. Turnovers were another hurdle, with 17 giveaways that impacted their offensive flow.

Brescia had a balanced offensive attack that powered them to victory, with four players finishing with double figures. Amelia Mackey led all scorers with 15 points, including three three-pointers, adding three rebounds to her solid night. Caroline Lucas contributed 13 points and was a force on defense with five steals, while Genesis Ghide-Bryan added 10 points and three assists. Jenna Krampe made a notable impact in just 13 minutes, scoring 10 points on 5-of-7 shooting and grabbing a game-high 10 rebounds.

Cumberland and Brescia battled through a fast-paced opening quarter, with Brescia ultimately pulling ahead 23-17. Brescia's Caroline Lucas set the tone early with a layup, and Jenna Krampe added another to give them a 4-0 lead.  Gordon responded with two quick layups for Cumberland, keeping them close. The teams traded baskets until Brescia capitalized on Cumberland turnovers and hit key free throws, pulling away with a late three-pointer by Jordan Joe to establish an eight-point lead. Walker closed the quarter with a layup for Cumberland, trimming the deficit to six points.

The second quarter saw Cumberland struggling to keep pace as Brescia extended their lead. Cumberland's Gordon opened the scoring for the Phoenix, capitalizing on a steal to bring them within four points early. Brescia responded quickly with a three-pointer from Cassidy Morris, followed by a series of baskets off Cumberland turnovers. Brescia's defensive intensity created multiple scoring opportunities, and they capitalized with fast breaks and well-timed shots, including a crucial three from Amelia Mackey. Despite Cumberland's efforts to chip away at the lead, Brescia's sharp offense and free throws left Cumberland trailing by 13 points heading into halftime at 40-27.

The third quarter showed a determined comeback effort by Cumberland, with key contributions from Jordan Harris, Faith Colston, and Kayla Gordon, though Brescia maintained their lead, ending the quarter ahead 54-48. Cumberland opened with a strong layup by Harris, but Brescia responded with a three-pointer to extend their lead. Cumberland's defense and fast-break plays chipped away at the deficit, including layups from Harris and Colston. Colston also drained two free throws and later hit a critical three-pointer to bring the Phoenix within five points. Despite Cumberland's hustle, Brescia's offense, including a late three-pointer by Jordan Joe, kept them in front, holding a six-point lead as they entered the final quarter.

In the fourth quarter, Cumberland fought hard to close the gap, but Brescia managed to maintain control and secure a 68-58 victory. Cumberland opened with a turnover but stayed aggressive, with key plays from Gordon and Harris. Harris added a layup, and Tarpley hit a three-pointer to keep the Phoenix within reach. However, turnovers allowed Brescia to capitalize, with Lucas leading Brescia's offense with fast breaks and free throws. Despite Cumberland's defensive efforts and strong rebounding, Brescia's steady scoring pace and Lucas's clutch plays in the final minutes kept them ahead.

The Phoenix will be back in action tomorrow as they take on Oakland City at 3:30 p.m.
