Men's Soccer Fall in MSC Semifinals to No. 2 seed Patriots

COLUMBIA, Ky. - - The Cumberland Men's Soccer team dropped their MSC Semifinals game against the No. 2 seed Cumberlands Patriots, 2-0.

Early on the game looked like a war of attrition, seeing both CU and UC go counter for counter with neither side looking truly more dominant than the other. Cumberland maintained a higher shot total through fifteen minutes while the Cumberlands looked to be in charge of the possession of the ball.

The first goal of the game came through a wonderful cross from Salvador Martinez, delivering a curling ball, to several time All-Conference member Shuma Sasaki. Sasaki met the ball at the second post and his header put the Patriots head, cementing what had been a great opening half for the Cumberlands.

With that momentum the Patriots seemed to put themselves in the driver's seat, adding on shot after shot for the next ten minutes. It was finally in the 37th minute that the Cumberlands added in the second goal of the game, sending a corner into the box which Rodrigo Riveros flicked up to Salvador Martinez who put away his shot, giving him both a goal and an assist.

That two goal gap followed the Phoenix into the half, meaning CU needed two second half goals to match their result from Williamsburg earlier this season.

Cumberland came out with a sense of urgency in the second half that only a team trying to defend their championship title could come out with. The Phoenix kept UC in their half of the field for spurts of two or three minutes at a time, pinging the ball around while they looked for any opening they could find.

Sadly for the No. 3 seed in the MSC Tournament, the Cumberlands managed to pull off several good saves and not allow the Phoenix a way through. Despite CU being the dominant team on shots, shots on goal, and corners, they were sent home to Lebanon on the wrong side of a 2-0 loss.

With the loss Cumberland will now await the NAIA Selection Show on Saturday, November 16th to figure out if they will make the NAIA National Tournament, and where they will be playing. The Selection Show will be live at 1 PM.
