Women's Soccer Drop MSC Championship to No.1 ranked Patriots

WILLIAMSBURG, Ky. - - The Cumberland Women's Soccer team fell in the MSC Championship game four goals to one, as the Cumberlands Patriots got revenge for their only loss last season.

After more than twenty minutes of action there wasn't a single shot on goal, a testament to the respect that each of these teams have for each other. While the Patriots seemed to have more control of the ball, CU had the more aggressive attack, mainly coming from counters.

Cumberland was the first side to register a shot on goal, as Lucia Mei sent a free kick down the left wing to Kadisha Martina who tracked the ball down and found Gabby Jones on the corner of the box. Jones took a couple of dribbles forward and put her shot at the near post, forcing a save from All-Conference keeper Georgia Martell.

From that point on in the first half it was all Patriots, putting more shots on goal in the final 15 minutes of the first half than they did shots at all in the first 30. Scoring the first goal of the game was the MSC Player of the Year Jayden Boelter, her 25th of the season, in the 31st minute.

Spoiling what looked like a possible comeback for the Phoenix in the first half, the Cumberlands added in another goal just two minutes later. CU didn't seem bothered by the goal though, responding quickly with a goal three minutes later, cutting their deficit in half.

With only five shots on goal in the first half and three of them going in the back of the net, the second half was set up to be a battle. Being the No. 1 ranked team in the nation for good reason, the Patriots came out of the break looking like a different team.

The urgency that the Cumberlands responded with in their opening 20 minutes of the half set them up greatly for what became their win-sealing third goal of the game. Yet again, Boelter found herself in the box and buried her shot to make the game 3-1. The Patriots added one more to that lead to make it 4-1.

With the loss the Phoenix will have to look for an at-large bid into the national tournament, where the selection show will take place this Saturday at 2 PM.
