Women's Basketball Battle it Out with Lions in Alabama

FLORENCE, Ala. - - The Cumberland Women's Basketball team took on DI opponents North Alabama in their final exhibition tuneup, falling 87-48.

Straight out of the gates the Lions showed how strong they were, missing two shots but grabbing both rebounds before dropping a three-pointer in to take the lead after their first possession. Cumberland's Myajae Eubanks hit a spot-up jumper to respond quickly for the Phoenix, shaping up for this game to be a shootout.

The Lions kept scoring at pace and it was Emaleigh Tarpley who kept CU in it for the moment, hitting back to back jumpers, including a big three to stop a North Alabama run. Despite trying to go shot-for-shot with UNA for the first five minutes, the Phoenix eventually began to miss some shots while the home team stayed red hot, taking a 14-point lead into the second quarter.

During a five-minute stretch of great defense from both sides, Mariyah Person got the Phoenix their only points on the board during the first half of the second period, while the Lions only managed three makes from the field in that same time span. Another timely three, this time coming from Maddie Brillhart, helped to keep the quarter in a reasonable distance but North Alabama were not in a mood to stop scoring, leading by 27 at the break.

Cumberland began to find some real rhythm in the third quarter, scoring their most points as Ever Walker led the charge offensively. The Phoenix put up a modest 15 points on relatively good shooting, but that trend of the Lions scoring in bunches kept true, outscoring the Phoenix by nine points in the quarter.

While in the fourth quarter the lead grew to the largest it had been all night for the Lions, there were positives for the Phoenix as it was their strongest quarter as a unit. Four different players all chipped in on the teams 15-point quarter, making more shots from the field than the Lions in the period, something they weren't able to accomplish all night until this quarter.

Cumberland won't be in action again until after a short Thanksgiving break, setting them up for action against Southeastern University on December 6th. Tipoff is scheduled for 5 PM.
