Women's Volleyball falls to Lindsey Wilson in MSC Semifinals

BOWLING GREEN, Ky.—Cumberland Women's Volleyball fought hard, but bowed out of Mid-South Conference Championships with a semifinal loss to Lindsey Wilson, 3-1. 

Cumberland challenged the No. 1 seeded Blue Raiders all match, but in the end Lindsey Wilson pulled off enough plays to get the four set win. Cumberland picked up 51 kills and hit .159 in the match. CU had 21 attack errors with seven aces and five service errors. The Phoenix finished with eigh blocks. 

The Phoenix were led offensively by sophomore Haley Mitchell and freshman Lila Cade. Mitchell notched 16 kills on a .355 hit percentage while Cade added 12 kills on the outside and also finished with 10 digs. Elaine Shaneyfelt did all she could on the back row picking up a career-high 39 digs. Emma Chavers had 24 assists and 15 digs. Manoella Gomes added 16 assists. 

Lindsey Wilson racked up 64 kills while hitting .200 as a team. The Blue Raiders had 10 aces and 11 service errors. The Blue Raiders also had eight blocks. 

The Blue Raiders had three players finish in double-figure kills led by Eli Burzio with 19. Savannah Pippen finished with 16 kills and hit .500 on the match and Ola Wyrzykowska had 15 kills. Libero Laura Milori had 25 digs on the back end. The two Lindsey Wilson setters combined for 55 assists. 

Lindsey Wilson built an early lead in the first set getting up 5-2. The Blue Raiders continued to push that out to a six-point lead up 12-6 and later 16-10. From there, CU went on a 5-1 run to get within two down 17-15. Lindsey pulled away again to get up by five. The Phoenix fought off setpoint five times before Lindsey Wilson finally won the set 25-22.

Down 5–3, and the second, Cumberland went on a 5–0 run to take the lead. Lindsey Wilson would level the score at 11–11, but Cumberland would again push the lead out. The Phoenix went on  4–0 run forcing the Blue Raiders into a timeout. Carr would extend that lead to 22–16. After another time out by the Blue Raiders, Lindsey rattled off six straight points to tie the set at 22–22. Lindsey continued that momentum and one and overtime 27-25 to take a 2–0 lead.

The third set was a battle from the start. The match was tied early and both sides played until a 8-8 tie, then to 11-11, and then to 17-17. From that point on it was point for point for Cumberland and Lindsey. The Blue Raiders got the advantage on match point at 24-23. The fended it off to send it to extra points again and ultimately won the set 28-26 with back to back points on kills from Roper and Mitchell to send it to the fourth. 

After the big set to keep the season alive, Lindsey Wilson started the fourth with five straight points and never looked back. Cumberland made moves to get within striking distance, but the Blue Raiders kept pushing the lead back out before winning the set and the match. 

With the loss, Cumberland's season will come to a close in the semifinals.
