Cumberland Blanks Faulkner in the Season Finale

MONTGOMERY, Ala.--Cumberland shuts out Faulkner as CU hangs 50 points in the season finale against Faulkner on Saturday. 

Cumberland (7-3) had everything going to finish the season. The Phoenix picked up win No. 7, the first seven win season since 2017. 

The offense had everything working as they went for 561 total yards of offense. The Phoenix ran the ball at will as CU rushed for a season-high 440 yards on the ground. Freshman Jacob Cornejo rushed for 163 yards and two touchdowns on 15 carries. Quarterback Luke Holloway added two rushing touchdowns with 105 yards of rushing. Nick Burge had 15 carries for 78 yards and Jeremiah Bryant had five carries for 56 yards including a 48-yard touchdown run. 

Cumberland also threw the ball effectively as Holloway completed 6-of-12 passes for 121 yards with one touchdown and one interception. Jarrius Rogers hauled in two catches for 78 yards and a touchdown. 

The defense held Faulkner to 98 yards of total offense on the game. Faulkner had 76 rushings and just 22 yards passing. The Phoenix had a slew of players see action in the game as Jalen Brown led the team in tackles with five. Dez Wallace had 1.5 sacks on the game. 

Cumberland had to punt on their opening possession, but that was the only punt CU had the rest of the half. As Faulkner took over the punt, their very first play the snap went over the quarterback and Duece Marshall elected to kick it out of the back of the endzone for the safety and an early lead. 

On the ensuing drive, Cumberland feed Cornejo the ball as he picked up 50 yards himself on the drive capped off with a 23-yard touchdown rush where he drug defenders into the endzone and pushed the lead out to 9-0 with 6:57 left in the first. 

Faulkner went three-and-out and punted the ball back to Cumberland. The Phoenix got in a 4th and short situation and put back Jeremiah Bryant in the gun. He went right up the gut for a 48-yard touchdown to extend the lead to 16-0 at the end of the first. 

The Eagles pinned Cumberland inside the 10-yard line on their first drive of the second quarter. Cumberland marched 93 yards down the field to score. Cornejo went for a big gain of 31 yards and Holloway had two rushes of 20+ yards including the 22-yard touchdown rush to push it to 23-0. 

Cumberland forced a turnover on downs and scored within two plays. The first play Holloway threw a 51-yard pass to Rogers and then he ran in a 12-yard touchdown rush for a 30-0 lead. 

The Phoenix would score one more time in the first half, as Holloway connected with Rogers for a 23-yard touchdown with just seconds left in the half and big lead at 37-0. 

Cumberland went for 345 yards of total offense in the first half while holding the Eagles to just 45 yards. 

Cumberland added one touchdown on a 46-yard touchdown rush in the third quarter. In the fourth quarter, Jack Kantner knocked in a 27-yard field goal and Christian Carter made a 32-yard field goal to close out the scoring for the 50-0 win.
