Women's Basketball Split Weekend with Loss to Foresters

HUNTINGTON, Ind. - - The Cumberland Women's Basketball team took on Huntington University in their second game of the weekend and fell 69-59.

The game was off to a flying start from the beginning of the first quarter, as each team combined to score nearly 40 points in the first frame. Ever Walker led the Phoenix with six points in her opening ten minutes, taking charge of the back and forth tie.

Again starting off the quarter with flying offense, the first five shots made from the field were all from beyond the arc, two of which were from Maddie Brillhart and Ever Walker. Walker's three gave Cumberland their first true lead of the game, but the Forester's answered quickly with a pair of back-to-back makes themselves.

After the strong start to the second quarter the offense did finally slow down as each team combined for around 30% shooting from the field, though the three-pointers helped the point total for the half. Just before the break it looked like Huntington might take a five point lead into the break, but another Ever Walker three helped to narrow that gap, 34-32.

The third quarter is where the Foresters really began to separate themselves from the Phoenix, outscoring the away side 22-12. Huntington shone the entire game when shooting from range and their six threes in the third quarter helped win them the game.

Cumberland tried to rally later in the fourth quarter, putting massive pressure on HU but more threes from the Foresters kept the Phoenix at bay. Ultimately it was a day for Emaleigh Tarpley to shine as the sophomore registered a double-double with 10 points and 14 rebounds.

The Phoenix will be back in action next week at Freed-Hardeman, where their MSC rivals will host a showcase. First, Cumberland will take on The Master's University from California on Friday, November 15th.
