Cumberland Baseball defeats No. 23 Reinhardt 11-7 in Georgia

WALESKI, Ga.--Cumberland takes down No. 23 Reinhardt with a 11-7 win behind 13 hits and solid performance out of the bullpen from Quinlin Wiley tossing five innings.

Brand Boxer had a day picking up three hits with three stolen bases including stealing home and scoring two runs. Tim Holyk went 2-for-4 with a homer and two runs scored. Preston Welchel added two hits and an RBI and Joseph Rodriguez went 2-for-5 with an RBI. Seth Sweet-Chick added two RBIs and Dee Triplett went 1-for-3 with an RBI and three runs scored.

Cumberland jumped on the scoreboard first in the top of the first inning. Brandon Boxer led off the game with a rocket single past the pitcher and then moved up on a wild pitch and swiped third. Boxer came in to score on an error off the bat of Dee Triplett. Later in the inning Triplett came in to score on a single to left from Preston Welchel for a 2-0 lead.

In the bottom half, Cumberland starter Thomas Wilhite picked up two outs quickly before walking the bases loaded. Reinhardt capitalized with RBI singles from Jarrett Burney and Luis Mendoza to tie the game after one.

Boxer led off the third with another single followed by a Rafael Garcia line drive single to right center and a walk to Tim Holyk to lead the bases. With the Eagles pitcher Carson Bennick throwing out of the wind up, Boxer broke for home and slide in head first safely with a steal of home. The Phoenix then took advantage of walks and hit by pitches as six straight batters reached via a free pass before Joseph Rodriguez singles in Seth Sweet-Chick for a 7-2 lead.

Reinhardt got three runs back in the fourth inning off of JP Kenyon. A walk put runner on and he moved up to second on a failed pick off attempt. A single from Jacob Profit scored one and Lance Dockery followed with a two-run home run to centerfield to cut into the Cumberland lead 7-5 through four.

With one out in the top of the sixth, Holyk belted a solo home run to left field for his second homer of the season and a 8-5 lead. The Phoenix tacked on one more in the sixth as Triplett and Welchel singled to put runners on the corners and Sweet-Chick brought Triplett in with a sac fly to right.

Alonzo Zuniga led off the seventh with a single and was replaced by courtesy runner Stoney Smith. Smith swiped second immediately before scoring on an error. Rodriguez came in to score on a wild pitch to put CU up 11-5.

In the bottom half of the inning, Tucker Zdunich hit a solo home run to right to get a run back for the Eagles.

Reinhardt started the eighth inning taking advantage of two errors by Cumberland to put runners on second and third. A sacrifice fly plated a run, but Quinlin Wiley worked out of a jam stranding two runners to take an 11-7 lead into the ninth.

Wiley picked up the final three outs in the ninth to pick up the win on the mound. Wiley tossed five complete innings entering in the fifth inning.

Cumberland will be back in action tomorrow with a doubleheader against Johnson University starting at noon.
