Walkoff Grand Slam Gives the Phoenix Pair of Wins in Doubleheader

Lebanon, Tenn. - -  Cumberland softball continues their undefeated streak with two victories against Johnson University. After a 6-4 win in game one, the Phoenix followed up with a thrilling walkoff grand slam by Abbey Chappell to secure the second.

The first game of the doubleheader provided ample action, with both teams scoring multiple runs in the first inning. Johnson recorded the first out of the game with a strikeout looking, but returned swiftly with three straight hits of their own.

A double from their catcher gave the Royals the opening run of the game, which they followed up with a sac fly and capitalized on an error to go ahead by three runs. Ashley Evans, Abby Chappell, and Karysn France all recorded hits in the bottom of the first, but were nearly left stranded before a controversial grand slam from Sara Brogdon.

Brogdon sent a ball over the left field fence, however only two runs from the loaded bases would count due to a baserunning error on first base. Both Evans' and Chappell's runs were tagged on the scoreboard, but France was called out at first base after an appeal from the Royals coaching staff, ending the inning 3-2 in favor of Johnson.

Both sides recorded a single hit in the second inning, though they would amount to nothing, turning things quickly over to the third. Ashley Evans walked to lead off the bottom of the third inning and was moved over by a Chappell hit, leading to a sacrifice bunt and fielder's choice RBI.

One inning later the Phoenix cemented their lead with a three run effort, beginning with an Abbie Peach single. A sac bunt and small ball helped to load the bases and Gracie Arnemann scored the first Cumberland run, while Kenzie France would smack a two RBI's double into the left field gap to give CU a commanding 6-3 lead.

Johnson made a strong comeback attempt in the top of the sixth inning to put the pressure on the Phoenix, loading the bases with two outs. Kaitlyn Higgins pitched the full seven for Cumberland and made certain that she would limit the damage, allowing just one run from four total hits in the inning.

Higgins was as cool as can be in the final inning of the game, putting three up and three down to give the Phoenix a 6-4 win to kick off their day.

Abbey Chappell's walkoff grand slam in the bottom of the seventh inning secured Cumberland's second win of the day, preserving their clean 4-0 record.

The game started quietly, with only three hits between the two teams in the first two innings. However, Johnson took the lead in the third inning with a strong offensive performance. They loaded the bases with singles and a hit-by-pitch before Reese Burns hit a single to bring in two runs, giving the Royals a 3-0 lead.

Cumberland's inning was uneventful as Madisun Pritchard controlled the game from the circle, not allowing any hits.

Carly Clinard took over pitching duties for the Phoenix in the fourth and limited the Royals to just two hits during her time in the circle.
The game remained relatively uneventful until the seventh inning with four total hits split evenly between the two teams.

Clinard forced three consecutive flyouts at the top of the seventh, all of which were caught by Anna Lay in left field.

At the bottom of the inning, Cumberland staged a massive comeback. Jacey Hatfield reached base on an error, followed by a single from Arnemann and a walk to Evans, loading the bases. Abbey Chappell came through in the clutch with a homer, driving in four runs and sealing a 4-3 victory for Cumberland.

The Phoenix will be back at Billy Dee Ross Stadium next Tuesday, February 20 against Tennessee Wesleyan. First pitch is scheduled for 1:00 PM CT with the second game following shortly after.
