Maryville's Strong Blocking Leads to 3-0 Victory Over Phoenix

Town and Country, Mo.-- Cumberland men's volleyball falls in three straight sets to host Maryville University on day one of the Maryville Invite.

While the teams were fairly matched in multiple areas, the Phoenix (1-4, 0-0) were notably outmatched in blocking, a factor that proved pivotal in Maryville's (9-3, 0-0) ability to go on scoring runs. Cumberland managed just one block across the three sets, whereas Maryville totaled 12.

As a team, the Phoenix hit .207% compared to Maryville's .367%. Serving statistics were evenly matched with both sides recording 15 errors and three aces.
Kaden Kuehler was Cumberland's standout attacker, tallying eight kills with no errors on .667% attacking. Jacob Whyte also contributed eight kills, along with five digs and two aces. Sam Mannebach chipped in 15 assists, four kills, and five digs, while Caleb Ginnings finished with nine digs.

Maryville's Luke Kraft led all players with 13 kills, maintaining an errorless .591 attacking percentage. Makai Scott was the only other attacker to reach double digits with ten kills. Libero Zac Clark recorded a game-high 11 digs.

After an opening exchange of service errors, the Phoenix took control of the first set with a decisive three-point streak, maintaining their lead through the middle portion of the frame. Strong swings from Austin Smalley and Alexander Huehler extended Cumberland's lead to 14-10, prompting a timeout from Maryville.

The Saints used the break to clean their offense, mounting a comeback fueled by a pair of kills by Luke Craft, setting the stage for a close finale.

A hard driven line shot brought the Saints level at 19-19, and a powerful block gave them their first lead since the opening point, going up 21-20. Maryville capitalized on their momentum, closing out the set with a 4-0 run, aided by a few unforced errors from Cumberland.

The Saints clinched the set 25-21, seizing the early advantage in the match.

Both teams played exceptional offense in the second set, with Cumberland hitting .400% and Maryville finishing at .480%. The defining factor in this set was Maryville's blocking, an area where the Phoenix fell short.

Maryville found an early lead in the frame with a 4-1 run, three of those points coming from untouched kills. Cumberland fought back to level the score at 11-11, with Mannebach distributing sets evenly to keep Maryville's defense guessing.

Both sides played tenacious defense, forcing attackers to be creative with deep corner shots and well-placed tips. A block and kill by Maryville's Jacob Fischer prompted a timeout from Cumberland as they trailed 18-15.

Following the timeout,  Nage Hendrickson sent a deep ball off the fingertips of a Saints defender to end the run at a critical moment.

Once again, Maryville demonstrated their ability to close out sets, as three consecutive kills propelled them to a 23-19 lead. A final swing from the outside secured Maryville a two-set advantage, repeating the score of the first set with a 25-21 win.

With the possibility of a sweep on the horizon, Maryville's attackers dominated the third set from the start. The Saints committed only two errors at the net, a level of play that Cumberland struggled to match.

During the middle stages of the set, Maryville surged ahead with a decisive 8-1 run, fueled almost entirely by kills, which extended their lead to 18-9.

The Phoenix were only able to put together short two-point runs as the set progressed, falling short as Maryville clinched a 25-18 win.

Cumberland will have two opportunities tomorrow to bounce back from the loss, starting with an 11 AM CT match against Missouri S&T. They will close out the tournament with a 2 PM CT game against Roosevelt.
