Holyk hits Walk Off Home Run to Beat Tennessee Southern 6-5

LEBANON, Tenn.--Tim Holyk walks off Tennessee Southern with a two-run home run to knock off Tennessee Southern, 6-5.

Cumberland (4-7) had a slow start and got down 4-0 after four innings, but battled and chipped away at the lead. The Phoenix tied it in the eighth inning, but the Firehawks regained the lead in the top of the ninth. Javy Beal roped a single to get it started in the last frame and Holyk followed with a homer to center to win the game.

Holyk went 3-for-4 with three runs batted in and scored twice. He was the only Phoenix to pick up multiple hits today. Preston Welchel and Ian Krump each hit a triple while Stoney Smith, Seth Sweet-Chick, and Brandon Boxer each knocked in a run.

The Firehawks started off the game well with the returning All-American Landon Rogers leading off the game with a home run. Tennessee Southern tacked on one more, capitalizing on a throwing error scoring courtesy runner Rhett Birdsong from first base.

Tennessee Southern tacked on to the lead with back-to-back doubles from Devin Buckhalter and Rogers in the second for a 3-0 lead. In the fourth, Ty Garrett drew a one-out walk and advanced to second on a wild pitch before scoring on a Buckhalter single to center.

The Phoenix finally strung a couple of hits together in the bottom of the fourth. Holyk and Dee Triplett each singled to start the inning. A pitching change for UT Southern and a hit by pitch to Welchel loaded the bases with no outs. Sweet-Chick grounded out into a fielder's choice that brought in a run, but a double play ended the threat with just one run coming across.

Cumberland added another run in the fifth as Krump led off with a triple off the right field wall. He scored on a single through the left single from Smith to cut into the deficit at 4-2.

CU manufactured a run in the bottom of the seventh as Smith was hit by a pitch. He moved up on a wild pitch and went to third on a groundout. Holyk drove him in with a single to right-center for a 4-3 lead for UTS.

In the bottom of the eighth, Welchel hit a triple of the centerfield wall to put the tying run on third base. Boxer followed with a rope to centerfield to tie the game at 4-4.

The Firehawks again capitalized on an error to retake the lead in the ninth. Buckhalter beat out an infield single and then with two outs advanced to third on an errant pick off. Noah Junker drove him in with a single to center to recapture the lead.

Javy Beal laced a one-out single to center to get the Phoenix going in the ninth and Holyk blasted his third home run of the season over center field for the win.

JP Kenyon picked up the win on the mound after tossing the ninth inning. The Phoenix tossed five different pitchers as Logan Baskin started on the hill throwing 3.2 innings giving up four runs, three earned. Quinlin Wiley threw 2.1 innings allowing just one hit and one walk. Jake Green threw the seventh. Reid Madariaga tossed a one, two, three eighth inning before Kenyon threw the ninth.

Cumberland is at home this weekend to take on Indiana Tech. The series will start with a doubleheader on Saturday and a single game on Sunday.
