Men's Volleyball Sweeps Home Opener

LEBANON, Tenn.-- Cumberland men's volleyball celebrates their home opener with a three-set sweep over Midway. The Phoenix dominated the first two frames and staged an exciting comeback in the third after an early deficit.

The Phoenix (5-8, 2-1) put up solid numbers across the board, recording ten aces, seven blocks, 32 digs, and 34 kills to grab the victory in three sets. The Eagles (2-10, 0-2) were held to just 23 kills and 24 digs while committing ten total reception errors.

Jacob Whyte once again led the charge with nine kills on an impressive .467 attack percentage. He also contributed six digs, matching the efforts of Sam Mannebach and Caleb Ginnings. Alexander Heuer led all players with 19 assists and served up three aces.

After an initial exchange of points in the first set, Cumberland's front row found their rhythm, taking control against the Eagles with a 7-2 run.
Midway's strategic tips and tool swings kept the game close but their efforts to stay competitive were hampered by errors, as for every kill they managed, an error held them back

The Phoenix finished the set strongly, going on a five-point run with Whyte contributing two kills and an ace. With 15 total team kills and a .310% attacking rate, the Phoenix secured a 25-17 victory.

In the second set, the Phoenix took an early lead with a 5-1 advantage and held onto it, even as Midway made a brief comeback with a three-point run to narrow the score to 10-9. Despite Midway's strong defensive play, especially in blocking, they struggled to match Cumberland's attacking.
With double Midway's kill count and five blocks, the Phoenix secured another impressive win, closing out the set on a run of three unanswered points to win 25-17.

Midway, eager to avoid a sweep, started strong in the third frame with a 7-1 lead, capitalizing on Cumberland's struggles with serve receive and navigating around their blockers.

A well-executed right-side tip from Mannebach briefly interrupted Midway's momentum, but the Phoenix couldn't capitalize on the opportunity as the Eagles continued to dominate.

Behind 13-9, the Phoenix took advantage of Midway's errors at the net and leveraged their strong serving, going on a 4-1 run to narrow the score to within one point.

The Eagles responded immediately, scoring three consecutive points by targeting Cumberland's inconsistent serve receive, regaining a four-point lead. However, their momentum was short-lived as they made three consecutive errors, allowing the Phoenix to claim their first lead of the set at 19-18.

Midway appeared to be on the brink of avoiding a sweep as they mounted another 3-0 run to take a 22-18 lead. However, the Phoenix called a timeout to stop their momentum.

The break proved pivotal for Cumberland, as they responded with an immediate kill from Whyte, sparking a 7-1 run that propelled the team to a 25-23 victory.

The Phoenix will return to the Dallas Floyd Phoenix Arena on Thursday, February 29 when they take on Brescia University at 6:00 PM CT.
